Clear Coat Paint Protection

Howdy

Now that I have moved to the Bahama's and no longer have the work truck my poor old prado will be living in the sun.

Does waxing with a quality wax REALLY protect the clear coat or is she doomed to peel like a 70 yo Gold Coaster?

It certainly will protect it. A sealant will protect for a longer amount of time though. The life of a good wax is normally up to 3mths where a good sealant will last twice that and sometimes more.

Peeling generally only occurs when those unscrupulous used car dealers get that "2 minute clear coat" applied to make the car look good.......for about 6mths if your lucky

Never had any of my cars peel at all, just a polish occasionally

when I was a detailer we had one saying; polish shines, wax protects and neither is any good without a hand job

Basically the quality of the finish and its durability will depend on the technique of the application, machine applicators are just not as good.

Become a big fan of Carnauba wax over the last few years.

I use Maguire's on my vehicles. I used to use it on my street machine and it was always an impressive product and have never had any complaints. there are plenty of others out there but prices can get scary for some.

Seen plenty of 80's around with peeling paint. There are two in our work carpark at the moment.

I can supply you with a bottle of paint protection (at cost) that uses nano technology. Never need to wax or polish the vehicle again. I have it on my own car and the camper.

I was/am a big fan of Carnauba wax about every three months on vehicles until I was OS this last Apr/May .. Picked up and used a liquid (heresy) Mequiar's Ultimate Liquid Wax (polymer) on a '07 Dodge RAM that had not been waxed in 6-12 months .. woa!! Very impressive for it's cost and ease of application.

Bought a bottle here and am putting a coat or two on the 'trol and I should up my economy by 2-3 L/100 ..
Just kidding but it works and looks really nice.

Hybrid waxes are becoming relatively popular these days and combine the depth of gloss of carnauba with the longevity of sealants.
What is the brand of the paint protection being mentioned?

Dazzler, if you'd like to give this one a shot I'd love to hear your views on it

I'd recommend Duragloss 601 bonding agent followed by Duragloss 105 for a really good protection for up to 12mths or, just the 105 for up to 6mths. These are both available online from Car Care Products ( one of my suppliers ). If you just want to go to the shop and buy off the shelf I'd go with a Meguiars product.

I also use the duragloss 601 & 105. then put a coat of Pinnacle Signature wax over the top.

I haven't actually seen a Prado with stuffed clear but seen plenty of 80's with it.

Dazzler another product worth considering is Collinite 845. A long lasting (5 months) wax that has been around for a long time.
Worth having a read on. Also doesn't leave white residue on rubber and is easy to put on and off.
Available from Car Care Products or Waxit.

I have used pretty much all the different brands of car care products (joy of working in an automotive retail shop) and these are by far the best

I don't bother with the Autoglym wash, I use meguires soft gel for that.
But I do use the super resin polish with the palm applicator and then the High definition wax.
However for the flat panels I do cheat, I use the Mothers palm polisher (wax attack). Best money I have ever spent.

Even if I did use the product that geko is talking about

I would still wax over the top. Old habits die hard.

Meguiars scratch X........when I need to polish the 4wd, it's usually to try and get out the pin stripes I've aquired !!

Still doesn't get them out....but makes them less noticeable....

Not wanting to tread on toes but IMO both Autoglym super resin and Meguiars scratch x aren't all that flash. Yes they will give a great looking, glossy finish and look like they've removed some marks but, both contain fillers which will hide rather than correct any slight blemishes and after a few washed most will return. In my experience Autoglym on its own will last 2mths tops.
The products I've mentioned won't remove any significant marks either as they're more designed for protection, but the protection will be far superior to the others.

Any wax can be applied over the top of the Paint Protection, for an extra layer. Though this is not necessary. Paint protection stops the paintwork from getting damaged by anything from the environment. Wax will add an extra layer but there is no reason to do so. Its like adding a wax layer over glass just to protect it. Paint protection seals the pores in the paintwork and bonds to your vehicle painwork. Wax when applied will still have pores available for the environment to be able to get in and damage.
