We were up at Burrum Heads on weekend spending some time with my dad, and decided to drive into the Howard Country Markets. WOW, these are like markets use to be like  :cup: loved it !!

Found some great bargain's and cheap fruit and vegies, but there was a old guy there selling home made Ozpig style cookers. Their well made, all the hinges and pins are stainless steel, have spark arresters in the three piece chimney and it all folds up to fit in the belly of the unit !

I asked the price and he said $170, I thought to myself "I couldn't build one for that", ( bearing in mind that all things welding are a mystery to me   :-[  ), so buy one I did  :cup: .

He started with seven units in the morning and by the time I bought mine at 9.30am he had one left, not bad for a half days sales

The markets are on the first Saturday of each month, if your up that way it's worth the drive to stop in and have a look around, I'm glad we did  :cup:

Cheers

Nice pickup, give it a spray with a can of pot belly black paint and it will look even better.

Have you fired it up, how well does it draw?
I owe, I owe, it's off to work I go...

Yep, fired it up this morning.....................draws well, the chimney is painted in engine enamel, but the belly could need a lick of black ( the photos are after I had it fired up this morning, hence the few marks on it ).
Now to buy a smaller camp oven to fit in the top  ;D

The chimney appears much larger diameter than the ozpig, which is probably why the ozpig struggles at times.

Funny you should say that, the old guy that makes them said he had to make a batch out of smaller size pipe ( the usual size was not available at the time ) and had to change the number of inlet holes in the bottom if the unit to suit the new /smaller pipe !

I guess air flow rates are a bit of a black art and some thought is needed to get it right  ???

The one I made has 3 inch pipe and it draws quite well. As D4D said, keep the pot belly black up to it. I am going to try engine enamel in the future to see if it works any better as the pot belly cooks off in certain areas every time we use it. It's frustrating because if you don't keep the paint up to it, it rusts very quickly and then you have to sand off all the rust Belford painting.

Looks awesome JK.

I find the oz pig is great for cooking and uses little wood, but it doesn't get that hot. To make a heater out of it we just use it as a fire bucket with the top open.

Your one may be a better all rounder.

That is a good price for that, i guess he will spend the next month building his batch then off to the market again. Not a bad retirement job!

How is education supposed to make me feel smarter? Besides, every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain. Remember when I took that home winemaking course, and I forgot how to drive?  (Homer J Simpson).

We cooked bacon and eggs tonight to see how it goes....................all good  :cup:   put the fry pan on top of the top plate and it radiated plenty of heat to cook what was needed  ;D

I think I might still drill a couple more air holes in the base to get it really roaring, I also found that it you fit the spark arrester in the top it slows the burn process done quite a bit !!

Measured the chimney is 2 an 7/8 ID , but a few more holes in the base would help......................................easy done  ;D
