"Talking Books"

I was at a Caravan Park at Mission Beach yesterday and a few of the Nomads there were chatting about books they get that are on CDs and listen to them on their travels.
A good idea or not?

I think it's a great idea , used to start work at 2.30am and would listen to ABC (only station I could pick up) and they they had stories they would play that early, made work go quicker and abit more enjoyable.
Would make some of the boring parts of the trip go quicker and you would spend more time doing better things when you got to your destination , instead of sitting around reading (nothing wrong with that if you like that ).

Talking books are great , used to borrow them from the library put them on in the digga or dozer and you shift would be over before you knew it .. worst part was some bone head would always call on the uhf just as a good bit came up , lol

I subscribe to Audible which has a very good range of books. Long road trips, the morning commute on the train (where it's too crowded to open a real book) and plain flights are where I listen. The narrator is critical to enjoying a book. Lou Diamond Phillips narrating John Clancy's Jack Ryan series is spectacular. Enough voice characterisation to know exactly who's speaking without overdoing it is the balance required.

Audio books are great, we listening to them all the time.

I highly recommend, "A mans got to have a hobby" by William McInnes.

I promise most of you will laugh your backsides off and relate to yourself, your own Father or an Uncle.

Big fan of Audio books, in the lead up to a trip I visit the library and ask friends about what I can borrow. I have purchased some on iTunes, part way through a trip when we have really been enjoying a particular Author or series. We even listen to them of an evening before bed on trips. It is really convenient to have them  as mp3 files stored on you phone or iPod type thing, if you have the capacity. Ive just downloaded books 1 to 5 of Game of thrones, need to plan a big trip to get through all of those!

Hi,
   SWMBO loves them, has an MP3 player and often listens to stories when we are driving. In her own car, the cd player will take MP3 disks and plays them in track order.
I rip the tracks for her, and put them on the ipod thingy with itunes (I hate the interface and have to relearn it each time I use the damn thing).


I can't drive with music or audio playing anymore - guess the number of brain cells is diminishing with age, and won't process all the information simultaneously.

We have an extensive Audible.com.au library, better bang for buck than iTunes. A long road trip is much longer without listening to a book or two.  We've even been known to drive around the block a few times if we arrive home before the end of the book.  As have friends.

I did not like them but it was a personal thing as i like reading and i equate reading to relaxing.

I also found that the one that i purchased the reader spoke in a really monotone voice so both were not a good combination when taking a work ute from Newman to Perth

Yep been using them from when they were on cassette to play stories for the kids. Now the wife gets them from the library as CD's when we travel in the more remote areas. The ABC gets a bit boring after a while.

I subscribe to Audible books, listen to them when driving.  I go through two a month.  Strangely enough a good book really keeps you alert on a trip, I initially thought it may be distracting but the opposite is the case with me.

I use them for study whilst commuting, but my preference for relaxation reading is hard copy, with real paper so I can turn pages

We're fans and use them on our longer touring holidays in the car. They're a great way to pass the time as you drive through towns for the umpteenth time on your way to somewhere more interesting.

We made the kids listen to Croc Attack stories on the way across to the Kimberley, but we usually listen to travel related stories like overlanding Sydney-Mongolia-London and Len Beadell etc...

The odd two Ronnies story goes down well too

Our public library has an app called overdrive which can be used to borrow audio books without going into the library!
Just need to enter your library card number. Search by author or title. And it's free Brilliant!

They are good to listen to. I have had half a dozen that I have used whilst driving the truck. One that I did listen to was about Keith Richards  how that bloke is alive, is beyond me.

We live them. We have hours of kids books and bbc educational science shows for the kids. It makes for easy long haul drives where the kids are happy to look out the windows. My trick is to fill up an old iphone full of a good selection if podcasts and talking books.

Cost 15$ per month - get 1 book every month to download. You keep the books, even if you stop the membership. Given the cost of audiobooks on CD's I found this to be a good solution. I store the file on our phone, so no handling/storage/dropping of CD's either...
