Long story short,
over many years a crack had appeared in the wall/head, management of the different power companies that controlled the plant choose not to do any thing about it in the name of saving costs.
With the 3 floods in six weekend in January last year they had to release water to prevent more damage, in doing so this made the structure weak and it was deemed unsafe and so was closed as a hydro generation plant, water that trickles from the plant now is for environment purposes only.
Essential Energy claim it would cost to much refurbish the plant to get it back up and running.
It has been proposed that the Hydro plant meets criteria that would allow for a "Green Loan" to fix the problem and once again produce 'Green Power'
And of cause it has been a political football as well.
I've probably missed something, but that is the nuts & bolts of it.

Just a silly question, if the water is not going through the turbines, where is it going? Must go somewhere.

The water that would otherwise power the turbines is fed from the Nymboida River.  The flow from the river to the turbines is controlled depending on the flow in the river.  At present the flow is turned to pretty well nothing and stays in the Nymboida River

Hey Paul,
it's still a great camp spot even without the water flow.
Use it as a base to explore the Clarence Valley, Platypus Flats, The Cod Hole and The Junction.
It's a short drive over to Buccarumbi, some good swimming holes over there, even in the Nymboida river down the road.
Just because there isn't a flow, don't let that put you off visiting the area mate.
If you would like some maps of tracks and day trips around the area, give us shout I can organize something.

Hi Guy,
Sorry it's been awhile since I've posted.
I read last week in a local rag that there is a push to reopen the power-station for power generation, which will mean that the Canoe Centre will get more flow as will farmers down stream.
Federal/state and local government have been putting pressure on essential Energy to spend the $$$$ and bring this facility back on line.
Not only for the health of the creek, but for the viability of all that rely on the flow.
I will try and keep you informed of any developments that occur.
