Sandblasting bars and sliders

The front bar and rear bar could do with a tidy up. The front is a TJM, which in reality had a Shit finish from new, but being complacent I just put up with it as I got it cheap

Anyone got a contact for getting bars sandblasted and undercoated ready for paint in SE Melbourne?

Any ideas what it would cost??

Don't know about Melbourne, but I had a 12m extendable trailer blasted and pained for my work.

The bill for the blasting and painting came in under $1000. There was a fair bit of work involved and would have been a couple of days work on and off so I thought the price was unbelievably low. But he did a great job considering the price he charged.

Probably no help to you, but gives you a bit of an idea what us country folk pay.

Sand it back by hand and paint it yourself?

I've done a few bars now and get good results by sanding back bad scratches and rubbing over the rest with a heavy duty scrourer.  I've used a compressor and spray equipment, spraycans, and now just uses a cheap airless sprayer (good results with less mucking about than a proper spray gun).  I use a 50/50 mix of flat and gloss black rustproofing paint to give me a satin look(though you may be able to buy it in satin these days). 

Auto acrylic out of a can gives a less-than-full-gloss finish unless you cut it back, but looks close to a powdercoated finish.  This is UV stabilised and you can match body colour.  But pressure paks are an expensive way to do it.

Honestly if your just chasing a black finish thats quite tough, the most effective way I have found so far on bars and such is the following.

Scotch brite the entire bar and get rid of all the shine off the powder coat.
(sand smooth and flaking or chipping)
Wash clean.
Wipe with tack cloth.
Paint with VHT WHEEL PAINT. http://www.vhtpaint.com/products/wheelpaint/

It is that simple. Great finish, lays flat and no need to worry about peel.

All up on the bull bar on the troll I used about 6-8 cans to get a nice tough finish, and just followed the directions. (that was inside and out though)
At about ($15ish) it should work out at no more than $150 in materials. Plus none for labor.
So all in all nice and easy.

My sliders were looking shabby. I wiped them with prep-wash, masked where needed, then hit them with some Squirts gloss enamel from Bunnings. Sliders will end up looking sad after a while, so no need to go to any real trouble there.....

It really is that easy. The hardest bit on my patrol was grinding the bloody bolts off as some numpty had rounded them all off for some bloody reason.
took nearly 6 hours to get it off...........

mine still looks pretty good IMO. The biggest trick I did learn from experience is to make sure you really hit it good with the scotch brite and sand it well.
Powder coat when shiny doesn't give a good finish with the VHT paint. Just try not to take it all off. Effectively Its using the powder coat as a primer.
Ill see if I can get a photo up of how the bar looks now for you.

From personal experience I have found if the powder coating is compromised then the corrosion will travel under the powder coating and you will forever have problems. Best to get it completley stripped & repainted/coated.

Lost, give the boys at JMC Powdercoating a ring, Phil 9792 9511, they are in Johnson Crt Dandenong, they did my ute hardtop and my bar after I fitted the fog lights to it, they dont do sand blasting, got that done by one of the mobs in Ordish Rd, cant remember their name. JMC do a lot of  the service bodies, I have found them good to deal with.  Going to get them to do the new ski boat trailer when I get around to building it, they are into 4wheeling as well, at least the old man is

For dirt cheap powder coating try Conbatch in bayswater. Way cheaper than anyone else I have found.

Agreed, I've just resprayed 2 roof baskets with British Paints Satin Black and you'd be hard pressed to tell it from powder coat. Bonus is you can touch up as often as you like to keep them looking like new and it is cheap. http://www.bunnings.com.au/british-paints-310g-spray-easy-satin-black_p1580723

My bullbar and rear bar are getting done as well. But I chose paint instead of powder coat. Hence I'm paying more than $300. But should look good when done.
