Same size, great value and good off road.

A new or second handChallenger (still compact but huge boot and space- almost like a Tardis  )  or a preloved Paj. Amazing value, great at towing and you will have the ability to go a little bit further than the other lighter duty options. The owner of the Captiva I recovered up on Teewah beach recently regretted not buying a car that could be a bit more adventurous.

Isuzu have launched the MU-X I have not seen one yet so cannot give any sort of review but if they are anything like the utes should go ok

I believe that will be Isuzu's version of the Holden Colorado 7 or vice versa --
Pricing up the base version of the Holden Colorado 7, it comes at a touch over $51000  -- 
Looking at the Holden Colorado 7, it does appear to be a 4WD with Hi-Lo Range, which is a good thing if one want's to do off road stuff.
I can't see that the Isuzu's version will be that much different price, but one can hope .

Not quite sure how kluger or territory aren't to big, when a prado is. I thought the kluger I've been in, and the territory I've driven were huge. The captiva we had wasn't anywhere near as big, but it's gone now replaced by a pathfinder (previous model) due to niggling electricals and not enough space behind the rear seats when occupied.

If you are looking at using the seven seats regularly think about how much space you will need to cart gear around when the third row is occupied. We couldn't fit a stroller in the captiva, but it comfortably fits in the pathfinder.

They just don't look as big and onerous from the outside I guess. Might be a differant story from the driver's seats. The prado is also more car then she needs, such as we don't need 2nd 4wd and with it comes the higher price.  Staying under $40k is appealing.

Seven seats will be used regularly for school drops so will need to be able to fit schools and wife's teacher kit as well (she's always transporting some tub with resources)

Thanks for all of the replies so far. So many more options then I first realised.  But if we are to start looking through dealers yards I'd probably limit the search to an SUV and not something that looks like a stretch hatch back.  I'm also not keen on the European cars as I fear servicing costs could get out of hand. I also know that Honda and Mazda parts are ridiculously overpriced.

The Isuzu would be worth looking at but not if its priced in line the Colorado. The outlander I don't mind from pictures.

It's easy to say buy second hand but harder to find a decent unit. In the past when I've looked at near new (1-3 year old) cars in yards the savings just didn't add up.

I already have a hilux. Might not be as capable off road as prado etc but more then enough for what we are starting to venture into. No need for another 4wd.

Isuzu no longer supply engines for the Holden's Colorado ute or wagon and haven't done since 2011 and this was one of the things that swayed us in our purchase in 2010 as we had been told this would occur (by a holden dealer) we both have had Isuzu engines in vehicles in the past and been happy with them.  But as I said I haven't seen or driven the wagon,  a google search finds a video review at the bottom of that says 4x4 price will be around $45,600 plus on roads so I guess it depends if they are willing to do some dealing.  If you pre register your interest you get $1,000 worth of accessories I am not sure how long that is for.  Good luck with your choice.

Fair enough, I found the Captiva felt compact to drive as well as looking much more compact.

Tubs of resources sounds like us too!

If you don't need a second 4x4 then I would suggest you look at a used Santa Fe.
Bron has one and I'm very impressed with it.  7 seat configuration, heaps of room and very well appointed.
And it 'turns on a sixpence'.
Also tows well on the black top.

If your using 7 seats then you can totally forget Prado at least in 150 guise, there is just room for the mallee tracks with a 7 seats, let alone a backpack or 5.     

Most when we were looking were the same but the 7 seats aren't needed for us so wasn't an issue

Go the 80 Series Landcruiser!!  8 seats.  Room left over for luggage.  Bullet and kid proof.  And, if you measure it, slightly smaller in outside dimensions and less weight than a current Prado.  Go figure.

If you don't need another 4WD then how about a People Mover in Best cars the HYUNDAI iMAX  CRDi was rated best followed by the Prius V () and the Peugeot 5008
