Do look out for the '100% climate controlled' gas, 'pure oil' and corn cobs in your tank, just in case you thought the oldies weren't really hip Greenies and as for grandma not being able to fill up her own car, who taught you that rubbish-

Those were the days when you drove into a Service Station you actually got "Service"
Unfortunately those days are gone and it's rare to even get a smile at the counter. :-[

A mates old man used to have a Servo in Lower Plenty that did full driveway service.  Everyday after school my mate would ride to the servo and pump fuel, check tyres, oil and clean the windscreen until closing time.

A bigger servo opened up next door, that did no driveway service and in the end slaughtered them on fuel prices.

WOW - cool pics!

I bet the unemployment level was a lot less in those days - and the level of pride taken in ones job was a lot higher too.

Yep. The oil companies argued that self-service was a good thing for all because fuel would be cheaper.

Guess how long THAT lasted.......

Same
Look at the price of fuel..

I remember things like the old man putting $5.00 fuel in the car, and watch how fast the litres went compared to the $$$$... now its so far the other way it aint funny

Back when servo's used to carry things like sparkplugs, points, leads, batteries, automotive things.. not get to the counter and (in your best Apu voice) "would you like 2 for one on mars bars today"

Love the carpark

When I first arrived in Adelaide 30 years ago the petrol stations all closed at the weekends, but some had pumps which you could put cash into to get fuel - a $2 note would get you 6-7 litres!
Camping is great as long as the mattress is inner spring!

My wife gets fuel at one of our local I dependant servos. Where possible they still fill up vehicles for the female customers. They also give a 3 cent discount for anyone that produces a Coles, Woolies, IGA fuel voucher.

When we stopped at Mt Morgan west of Rockhampton December 2011, we got fuel at a servo there and we got driveway service. I got out to fill the car and the lady there said " hang on a minute I'll do that". I went to clean windscreen and same thing happened.

Another thing I'm interested in was how many different Fuel Companies did we use to have in Oz?

Eg, Mobil, Shell, Caltex, Esso, Golden Fleece, BP. Any others?

Obviously that early stacker carpark uses a lift system but I was kinda wondering if an attendant had to drive them on and off the lift presumably between the 2 stacks and where are the hand rails? Ans: Obviously you don't want to chip the punter's car doors on hand rails at the ends  :D

Exmouth Fuel Supplies (In Exmouth) are also driveway service (there is one girl there who refuses to do boats... so you have to fill your own boat) I do feel kinda lost for something to do though while the car is being filled up..

Forecourt service seems to be pretty much gone these days and i don't mind filling my own car and cleaning the windscreen but what i do find very frustrating is that most service stations are also now mini-marts and when you go in to pay for your fuel, you have to wait in a line while the people in front are purchasing their grocery items and their kids are still deciding what lollies they want. It seems to take forever. Fuel purchases should have a separate counter and till with another one for sundry purchases. >:(

Or just let us pay by card at the pump...

I know some over here do that, the Woolies ones all have the facility but only if you have one of their credit cards I believe.

Not their business plan! Keep you in the shop as long as possible so you get bored and start checking out the shelves for impulse purchases. This is, as we all know, how they make most of their $$$.
