Looking at getting a Ironman Snorkle for my 80 series. Just wanting to know who has a Ironman fitted &  how long have you had it & how is it holding up?
Not interested in other brands. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Cheers, Mike.

I've got one the 80. Didn't really choose it by preference but got it for a good price. Pretty happy with it. Easy to fit and the template was pretty good. The only thing I found was the hose clamps were a bit average so I replaced them. Had it about six months. Done plenty of deep crossing and no issues. Hasn't faded. Pretty happy overall

The company I work for has them on their fleet of mine site hiluxes.  They only hang onto them up to 160000k but they do the job. No issues.

So I grabbed an Ironman snorkle on Saturday & thought I'd have a look at starting the install Sunday afternoon. Taped up the guard on the 80, put the template on & taped it down, marked all the holes to be drilled & thought this is too easy. Before I started drilling anything, I took the template off & placed it on the snornkle itself. Out of all the holes on the template only one lines up with the actual snorkle.
Now, when you drill these holes you put a 4mm pilot & then take them out to 16mm & I dont know whether that's going to be enough slop to get it to fit.
So, do I just drill it as per the template & elongate the holes as neccessary or do I modify the template & hope that it all fits the way it's supposed to. Thoughts.
Cheers, Mike.
P.s.    Do not say I should have bought a Safari.

It would depend, how close is the template to the other holes.

If they are half a hole out, just drill a bigger hole, if they aren't even close, take it back and come home via the local ARB.

I have to ask why you were/are so keen on this particular brand? Given your clear lack of product expectation.

If you use a "Step Drill bit"  it will be a much cleaner hole. these are made for drilling sheet metal!

Hey mike,

We did have a batch of snorkels with the template at the wrong scale. It sounds like its possible you may have gotten one of those. I'd suggest jumping on our site and under "technical" you'll find some digital versions of the templates. If you print one of them out at 100% you should be good to go.

It's really unfortunate that you received one without a template that works for you. Dont hesitate to shoot me a PM if I can be of further help. Sorry about the inconvenience.

Cheers,

Matt

nice to see Ironman jumping on here swiftly.

can i add Matt, that i checked out the technical section per your advice, but couldn't find the template. the fitting instructions are there.

maybe provide a link to make it easier. even better yet, printing one of those template at 100% will challenge most home users, how about posting one out to Mike?

Sorry about that, doing it off the phone isnt as easy. I'll update once I get in the office :-)

EDIT:

Hey Mike,

I've just gotten into the office and had a quick chat with our head of technical services.

Apparently we've never had an issue with the 80 series snorkel templates being out of scale (there is a batch with the wrong templates but not for an 80 series).

So from the sounds of it, it is more likely that it is just a case of the template hose not perfectly aligning with the holes for the snorkel (which isn't an issue as there is some play designed in the snorkel mounting and template to compensate for this).

Have another look and if you can send some pics of how far off that would be a great help.

Alternatively if you want, feel free to shoot me a PM with your number and I'd be happy to put you onto someone who can talk you through it in detail.

I used a step drill when I fitted mine and they do a great job. I only had to elongate 1 hole slightly to make it fit which I thought was pretty good. My template was pretty spot on as well as ironmans other products I have purchased.

Spoke with the shop that I purchased the snorkel from & spoke with one of the fitters about my concerns. He assured me that it will be right and can look deceiving when you hold the template to the snorkel.
Thanks for your reply Matt. Great to see.

As to the other replies regarding step drills, I'm already a convert with about 4 of them in my kit.
Cheers, Mike.

Just a hint for step drill bits.................

Don't drill too fast.

A good quality drill with high torque is much better than a cheapy that revs it guts out...............

Yes I use heaps of them, and they are good, BUT - Don't go fast!!!

Cheers and hopefully helpful

Nice work so far. Make sure you touch up the holes with a bit of touch up paint to prevent rust, and make sure you have a ratchet spanner handy to tighten those bolts closest to the rear

When you touch up the holes, give the panel a good cut and polish before you fit the snorkel.

It will protect the paint.

Mine's a Winter Edition 96 model. The Blue Marlin was built in 94 & is a different colour altogether.
