Keeping the CT safe

Hi everyone,

With the eminent arrival of our CT I've now been keeping the wife awake with trips and what we can do when in the area. One question she had which is quite valid, is how are CTs kept safe when you're out enjoying the surrounds? Especially in the more secluded spots.

Has anyone ever returned to have their pride and joy interfered with? You hear about the vandalism that occurs to campsites and was wondering about the trailers.

Get the lock to fit your DO35 hitch - Complete should be able to supply you with one

That stops it from being taken but what about vandalised/broken into?
Does this happen much?

When I read about the damage to areas such as Merringtons (I think) what would stop it happening to a CT?

I have a tregg hitch and I have a lockable hitch pin that I place thru the tregg when ever I'm away from camp, its not perfect, but I guess I get some piece of mind.

Its insured and for more then its worth so if they take it when I have it locked it might help me get a brand spanker ....who knows.

If someone wants to vandalise your trailer whilst you aren't around you just can't stop it..........all the locks in the world will not stop a knife from slashing the canvas and tyres etc etc.

Lock and keep out of site your valuables....better yet keep them in the tug.

Anything you do, like leaving a radio on etc, is only to give you some piece of mind.

Get good insurance and as swanny says over insure by whatever your comfortable with to pay for the pain of getting another one.

I have heard of heaps of thefts from camper trailers and thefts of camper trailers but not so much about vandalism of them.

Just enjoy te camping.

Completely agree Nomad...just helps to get the wife into further away spots with her knowing its safe as can be. Me I couldn't two hoots, as long as I'm out there. Different story on the other side though...locks the car when unloading the shopping!!

You will find that the further away spots are the least of your drama. It is the populated spot that attract all kinds that have more problems. The least amount of people that know you are there, the less chance of something going walkies

I worry more at caravan parks than out bush.  Number of kids running around and people walking past in a CP is more temptation than when a bit isolated.  We always put the annex walls up in a CP but not in the bush.

I have not heard of a camper been stolen when set up, I think the hour or so that it would take would deter them. Its the smaller items that you need to be careful off and as others have said that depends on where you are camping. If anywhere near towns or in caravan parks your gear is open game to anyone. Camping out in the National parks or isolated areas you have less chance of things going missing as generally the light finger types do not frequent them.

When we go out we tidy up a bit and make sure anything valuable is in the car or locked away, that being in the camper in a locked storage area or chained/cabled up. You will only stop the honest people, if someone really wants something it will go.

After giving a hand at a CP on our round Australia trip most thefts there are due to opportunity yep it is the guy that leaves the waeco out under the annex that will get hit

So when you go on a day trip pack everything away also get to know your neighbours as they will usually say if something is suss

We have contents insurance so if we leave say the Engel,Honda Generator,Camera ,Video,Laptop etc inside the annexe or toolbox it is covered,BUT only if you can show forceable entry.We lock the zippers on both sides of the annexe so only way in is to cut in or cut padlocks.Check your product disclosure it should actually say must show forceable entry.For the CT we use the DO35 Hitch Lock and a wheel clamp.At some stage we video our setup with what weve done and its backup for insurance claim.Might sound anal but we want to be covered.

Take the wheels off and take them and the wheel nuts with you.

If they want it, they will take it.

We spend on average 6-8 weeks a year traveling with our CT over the last 10 years, we have travelled extensively in every state and stayed in everything from the busiest caravan parks to the most remote desert camps imaginable.

In all that time we have never had anything damaged or pinched, with the exception of a rogue possum who tried to break into our food cupboard  And I also can't recall ever speaking to a fellow camper who had anything pinched. So in my experience I would say it is rare.
