UHF install

Where have you guys mounted your UHF radios?
I have a Narava and just after some good ideas.
Wouldn't dare ask on recommendations for radios,I am going for GME as an Australian product.

I've always been a fan of roof mounting radios, keeps them up and out of the way. I hate having stuff on or over the dash, the cords are always in the wrong place. eg over air con controls or the CD player.

Good call on the gme mate, I've had one in every car I've owned and never a spot of trouble, and as you say their Australian.

Remote head radios are the easiest to install as all you need is the mic up on the dash. Saying that though most radios are pretty small these days so they can be installed most places.

The most common place I put them at work is under the dash with the mike coming through a little hole. The only downside is that it isnt unusal for the speaker to be hard to hear. But an external speaker is an easy fix. Again mounted under the dash works well.

It does make for a very clean installation, but I am more partial to a roof console.
More storage space, easy to use and nice and high which makes it easy to hear.
I am a bit short though, so I don't have to worry about hitting my head on it.

Some units have the speaker in the Mic (Uniden and Icom from memory) so this overcomes this issue, an external speaker solves the problem though.

Yep they do, but they are not overly loud in my opinion.

It is possible, but not overly easy due to the power output of the external speaker jack and the power level of most car radio speakers.
You also run into feedback noise and signal interference.
The only way I have achieved any real success is to run a double jack cable from the rear speaker output on the uhf into the aux jack into an aftermarket radio.
That way the radio's built in amplifier can boost the signal power.
You also don't run into interference issues due to the radio only sending out the signal from the Aux in (UHF) to the speakers.

This is where I mounted my GME 3100tx (I think that's the right code?) in my Pathfinder
Had to pull a few bits of the dash out (which is simple) and drill a couple of holes in the plastic storage pocket to allow cables to pass through. Works a treat. I can still use the storage pocket too

I have an Icom IC440N and no problems with speaker clarity.  Nice neat installation with only the mike on the dash.

Has anyone any experience with the Digitech 5w UHF. I haven't heard of them before but seem a good price.
