If you end up around Scottsdale, check out Myrtle park camp ground. I cannot recommend it highly enough. $5 a night and about $15 for a drum of fire wood. A beautiful river filled with trout and diurnal Platypus and wonderful hosts. I am not connected with them in any way. I have only stayed there once before and liked it soo much we are heading back in October.

we will be there from October 23rd (my birthday) for a month.... can't wait spent 3 weeks there for our honeymoon 3 years ago and it wasn't long enough.... didn't make it to Cradle Mt last time so going the first this time

Fixed.  I have been to Mount Wellington at Christmas time and been driven back into the car by sleet.

Me and a mate toured Tasie on push bikes in Jan. '76.  Rode up Mt Wellington on a stinking hot day and there were still pockets of ice about on the top, so obviously not too long since the last cold snap.  When we got back into Hobart the 'Mercury' banners announced:  "HOTEST DAY ON RECORD".

Yep, definitely worthwhile if you like markets.  Probably the largest market in Tasmania, predominantly arts and crafts and some nice food.

Salamanca Market and the Battery Point area are tops, very interesting just to walk about for a few hours on a saturday.

Coles Bay/Great OysterBay and Freycinet Peninsula are awesum!

St Helens and Bay of Fires up there too.

I live down the road from Penguin Markets go there quite often just to amuse the kids - but I don't rate them that good, but the salamanca are worth a visit if your down that way on a Saturday

I was wondering if anyone can tell me roughly how much it is to take the family, car and camper across to Tassie? We are thinking of going across early next year and did an online quote after seeing the ads for 84 bucks each person plus 84 for the car but the quote came back for $1700 for 2 adults, 2 kids, 1 toddler, the Patrol and the swan. Return... Was thinking I may of stuffed it up so did it again and came up with the same...

Yes apparently our ever so wise government haven't worked out that if you subsidise some of the cost, more people will come and spend more.

If that's what I have to pay, then that's what I have to pay I guess. If they did subsidise the price you might consider a couple of trips in a year if your pushed for time...

Yeah I noticed they are out to sting you. So you take up 2 car spaces and on the quote it was over $600 for the car and camper yet they are advertising 84 dollars for 1 car...

$84 is for a very small car  . Camper trailer/ caravans are cheaper than a normal trailer with a tent and camping gear in it. Go figure

While visiting earlier this year there  was lots of talk from travellers how they didn't bring there caravan over as it was to expensive and those who did also shied away from the attractions as they had the cost of fuel and CP prices to deal with.We found the CT the cheapest way as if you tried it by way of staying in cabins ,motels,B&Bs etc the prices were up there.The was a radio program on that I listened to and it was about the Tassie Government being very worried about people not coming over and they were having a pow wow with the Tourism Board and Spirit Of Tasmania I think they said TT Line to come up with a solution.

Just a tip on saving some dollars is to purchase the Entertainment Book Tasmania Version $60 it can be viewed online so you can see the offers which there are a lot.We used it in the 5 weeks and it afforded us to see everything.It goes from June till June and we purchased it on special for $40 delivered in the October previous to our following Feb trip.

We didn't bother to bring our trailer across on the boat when we visited in July. We left it in Melbourne for 10 days at a caravan storage place - cheap as. I was speaking to the guy who runs the storage yard and he pointed out that it in recent years, it is becoming more common for those who live in Tassie to keep their vans in storage in Melbourne. The storage cost for 12 months is still cheaper than bringing the van on the boat.

We love the free camping in Trial Harbour on the West Coast.

We also looked to take the CT over in Jan... very expensive. Last time we went with a tent, was hoping to revisit with our CT, won't be a quick, cheap get away now.
