Trying to work out how long we'll need to take off for this trip.

I was thinking 3 days, but that would be some big days driving with 3 kids ( who'll be 1, 2 and 8 )

What have others planned or done for Sydney to Alice?

We did it back in 2009 but took 9 days to get to Ross River, via White Cliffs, Broken Hill, Tibooburra, Cameron Corner, Maree and Oodnadatta Track, Coober Pedy and the Painted Desert.

Next year we're off to the Kimberley but the wife and daughter are flying in to Alice and I'll make my own way up via Bourke, Innamincka, Birdsville and across the Plenty Highway, probably take a week to comfortably get to Alice.

I think to do it in three days is a big push, take a few more daysand enjoy the scenery of this big wide land.

penrith - broken hill 1100klm, 13 hours
broken hill - coober pedy 950 klm 10 hours
coober pedy - alice 650klm 7 hours

doing it in 3 days is Ok if you have no interest in whats along the way

doing it in a week or so gives you 5 years worth of trip planning information of places you have to go back to because you didn't have enough time

About 12 years ago took the wife and kids on similar trip. Three weeks all up.

Sydney to Port Augusta, via Mildura, the straight up to Cooper Peddy, the to Ayers Rock, Kings Canyon, Boggy Hole, Palm Valley, Hermansburg, Alice Springs, followed the old Gahn Railway south, then oodnadatta track down to William Creek, then on to Leigh Creek, then across the norther part of Flinders Ranges onto Broken Hill, Dubbo and home to Sydney. From memory about 7000 Kms. A great adventurous holiday. Did a lot of free camping except for main stops.

Kings Canyon was great, Boggy Hole was great, Palm Valley was great. Could write forever, but I will not bore you.

Brings back memories.

Wen l travel it usually at about 80KM average . 10 hours 800 km . That would have to be tempered with pit stops & running of the kids , food , drinks  & " Are we there yet ???. Try to plan it as a family trip not a CannonBall Rally .
