Internet and its availability

I am thinking a bit ahead of myself ,but am wondering how  you guys get internet in your travels.
I can imagine that coverage is poor.
Do you use your phone as a hot spot ,special modem form Telstra or just hope that the next town will have service.
Within the next year I hope to be on the move but will still need to be in contact with work and family.
Any thoughts please.

3g modem under the seat, SIM card in the back of it, external antennae on the roof.

Telstra 3g blue tick phone for calls and internet (1gig of data).  Telstra 4g wireless mobile modem (8 gig of data) for internet.  External magnetic base antenna and patch leads for the phone and mobile modem.  Place the antenna where best to get a signal, or can just leave on roof of car.  Kevin

iPhone 4S has 3G with a data plan.    It provides a Personal Hotspot via BlueTooth or USB cable.   With BlueTooth it doesn't even have to come out of my pocket.   No fuss and don't need a separate modem or plan for the laptop.

We just use our phones as a hotspot if we need a laptop. We are both on Telstra because of the coverage.

I used to run a separate 3G modem but now I use my Nokia Lumia phone which has 4G and WiFi tethering. Works great expect no external antenna option.

4g mobile phone USB 3G stick and sat phone for emergencies. Don't have a sat connection for Internet it is painfully slow and expensive.

My Samsung Galaxy S2 has a hidden antenna port so I bought a patch lead and connect it to an external antenna which typically gives me an additional 2 bars. I use tethering to turn it into a hotspot and connect the IPAD to it to connect to internet.

Though my old HTC phone has packed it in.    The current Huawei is dodgy as.

What ever you do you will really get a better signal by having the ability to use an external areal.

Have been wondering about this. I have a spare mounting point on the bullbar for another aerial. Tossing up between 3G or an AM/FM aerial. The reception on my Prado radio is crap.
With our trip next year I need to be able to bat good coverage so my daughter can keep up with her school work which a available on line.

I know Telstra is meant to be the best but invariably my mates get better reception in the High Country with their Optus phones.

That would be a pretty isolated example.  From driving all over QLD and NT anything other than Telstra is pretty useless.

I know.  It's frustrating because I have stayed with Telstra mobile for 25 years because of the better coverage.   There are quite a few areas up in the High Country where I've noticed my phone says "SOS Only" which means it's picking up the Optus towers.
