Roof Rack Setup - Support for Canopy

Hi Swaggers,

Looking at getting some Rhino Roof Racks for the Hilux so that I can fit an awning. The Roof Rack will also carry (folded up) the side tent that I'm going to get for the awning for quick trips away.

I'm looking at fitting one of the roof racks to the top of the tug cabin and the other on the front end (closest to the cab) of the canopy.

Has any one done this before? My guess is that the canopy wont be strong enough. The awning is 2.5m long and to distribute the weight, the awning will hang over the front of the cab to much for my liking.

I know that you can get kits so that the roof racks can be on top of you canopy. Has anyone fitted one before or is it better to get it done professionally?

Please don't the flex between the cabin and the tub will destroy your canopy

Correct, you will need an internal frame

The awning is 2.5m long and to distribute the weight, the awning will hang over the front of the cab to much for my liking.
You can mount the awning on the canopy once the proper framework is in place

I have a flexiglass highback canopy with thier roof racks.
Also have a 2.5m awning mounted.
But I mounted my awning to the roof racks over the cab instead of the canopy.
I have the hi lift jack, shovel and max traxx mounted to the canopy roof racks.

OK they are an easy fit but not a job for the inexperienced. I suggest you contact Rhino Rack via their website for a suitable fitter in your area

Not sure if you already discounted it or not but there are some awnings that are only 2.0mtrs in length rather than 2.5mtrs .

I too do not care much for the massive overhang and with the cruiser having the 3/4 roof rack I wanted only 2.0mtr in length . I found a few and settled for supapeg 2.0mtr long and 3.0mtrs out from car . Which I preferred as it leaned too to ground ith enough room to sleep.
only drawback is this size does not have self standing poles.

Well have decided that I won't get the roof racks on the canopy.

What I will do is remove the awning when driving around town, which seems pretty easy. Going to trade the ute in soon with the misso's wagon.
