Gday just looking into upgrading the car before the  new camper arrives and the mrs isnt to keen about driving a cruiser or patrol around on a day to day basis as she reckons it would be too big for her?? So we have been looking at prados , any advice or pros and cons from prado owners would be much appreciated

Check that the back door will open with your camper attached before you hand over your $$$. Great vehicles BUT the back door can be a PITA.

We have had the draw bar extended by 300mm ,would this help?  Whats the dramas with the doors?

Maybe but you would want to confirm it clears your hitch (it should, although Pajeros can have problems here because of the spare wheel location) and your stone guard etc. it is usually the stone guard on the draw bar that will bring you unstuck. Ask the CT owner/manufacturer if they are aware of the compatibility with a Prado.

It was a deal breaker for us this time round (I have had two new 120 TD's and loved them).

We have a trig hitch on the jayco and as there is no handle on top the back door clears the hitch no worries.
Btw, we are selling our 120 prado in July/Aug!

I don't have a problem with the boat or the box trailer with regards to the back door clearing and both only have standard hitches on a flipped over tongue mount so most decent ct receivers shouldn't be a problem. Not sure whether 300mm will get the door fully open but it should open far enough.

I am just about to order my 4th so I don't really need to say much more about them than that.

We have had a 100series and a 120 Prado.  Prado is far more car like and my wife way prefers to drive it than the cruiser.  The good thing about the Prado is the running costs of the petrol and diesel are very similar in the long run so the choice is easier.

Dont discount Pajero - much cheaper and just as capable. 

We have the earlier non common rail Prado (non D4D) and it returns around 12.5 everywhere with slightly taller tyres.  The D4D should see 10's to 11's.  The petrols around the 14's.

Highly recommended.

I love the FJ but for everyday dropping kids off, maybe not as user friendly as the Prado.

I've had a petrol 90 series sold that and bought petrol 120 sold that and bought TD 150 last year. Did no mods to the first 2 and both cars did well even on some moderate 4wd tracks. Have done heaps to the 150 as I plan on keeping it for a long time.

Re the back door- mine opens most of the way with the ct hitched on. If I really want it open all the way, say to use the table I have in the back door, I just swing a bit to left upon parking. Can then open the rear door all the way.

If you're buying a second hand 120 just do your research on the diesel injector issues and ensure you buy a car that has been properly serviced.

Our 120 series petrol Prado serves as a soccer mums car 49 weeks of the year. Just a commodore wagon on a 4WD chassis really in terms of size. We came out of a VX station wagon and it is not much different.

Take her for a drive in a VX or Sahara 200 Series. They have electric height adjustable front seat, and get her to go for a drive.  She might well be pleasantly surprised.

The Land Cruiser is a big(ger) and sure when one first gets in this seems like a challenge. I drive mine everywhere, and except for the lift kit, roof racks, shovel and HiLift  I could park it anywhere too.

Seriously, in standard guise they fit in everywhere and are no more difficult to park than any vehicle bigger than a Corolla. The Prado is an awesome vehicle, I'd be happy with one and my wife would prefer it (probably just because I HAVE a LC  ). The trouble with owning a Land Cruiser is once you've had all that space any other vehicle feels too small.

We've got the 120 D4D version. Love it, it goes everywhere I need it too, drags the KK without too much hassle - you just need to be proactive when going up hills i.e. keep the revs and speed up. Although the back door wont open all the way with trailer on, it does clear the treg hitch pin. If you have a manual handbrake leaver that sticks up I would be more worried about that.

However when its time is done - it will probably be replaced with 200 series or whatever number they are up to at the time. The prados are good, the 200's are great (don't let CRW see this comment).

Just bought a 2008 Prado to tow our Cub Brumby ......probably the door will touch on the camper brake..........and yes will clear the Treg. Will put a rubber stopper on the brake. Can't wait to hook it up.

Long as we can open the back to fill the fridge when empty .....
So far am loving the Prado

Bahahahahaha.........It popped straight out and I let the kids colour it in with texta, so it looks brand new.

Its just a little bit rusty so its going west for a holiday from the salt.
