We are currently in the market for a new 12000 lb winch for our 80 series as our trusty old Warn expired & is not repairable. We are heading to the Cape in August & want an idea on what brands to look at. Our price range is up to $1300. Any ideas would be appreciated, I have found a new VRS 12500lb for $1127 but am unsure of the quality, I have also looked at Ironman, Avenger, & TJM ox as well. Its really only insurance if we get stuck on this or any other trip we do towing the Cub with it & the truck fully loaded. Any advice on these or other brands within this price range would be appreciated.

I have a VRS 9500lb winch, been great for the las two years and we have used it numerous times, actually I think all the winches mentioned so far will be fine.

Before I say to much and just so you know yes I do sell winches- Runva and Mean Mother winches.
My first question is what is wrong with your Warn winch? They are usually good to get parts for.
If you do end up getting a new winch just make sure you look at the specs. There are a lot on the market that have small motors and the gear ratio is not matched to suit this. This means you are running everything to maximum and wont last as long as it should.
All the brands mentioned so far should be fine for what you are after.

We were told by a reputable 4x4 store the old warn was completely stuffed so they bought the cable & winch off us for $400, probably got duped but its done now. We also need to get a cradle for the winch as the whole lots been taken off so hopefully that doesn't create too much of a drama.

Why do you need a cradle. Shouldnt the new winch just bolt into the mounting holes of the winch bar?

Only the newer bars take the winch bolted straight up behind, most of the older bars required a separate cradle to mount the winch to the chassis.

My only concern is 9000lb enough to pull out the truck & CT. If I upgrade the motor is that all thats required to increase to say 12000lbs or is there more to it, I'm a novice at this so a bit cautious before I hand over the money for it. Apparently verything else on the winch is fine & there

There is more to it than motor, it will pull more but not 3000lbs more but the 9000 is round 20kgs lighter.

It will depend how stuck you really are. You can also use snatch blocks for a double/triple line pull... Easierst way.

And if your really that stuck, remove the trailer, and recover 1 at a time.

I'm using the same Warn xp in my Prado as I did in my GQ and neither ARB bar required a cradle .

We all used to use 9k or 9.5k win he's on Patrols or Cruzas until the last few years when the 12k became more affordable and readily available. Just remember using a snatch block or 2 halves the required load on the winch it doesn't double the capacity.  The max you get out of a 9k winch will be 9k lbs.

I had a found the Avenger a great winch for the money, 12,000lb fast and reasonable current draw.

My local Toyota dealer is selling super winches for about $1150 think he had 4 left.

I used to have a M10000 and went back to a XD9000.. the 20-30kg of weight difference is big.

We use the warn 9500lb xp's for work and they have been good, however they still fail if used beyond their design limits. The best winch I have used to date is the Warn 8500lb high mount I currently have on my cruiser. It's quick, easy to get to and with a snatch block or two has more power than I will ever need............so far.

That's the one, favoured by a lot of the challenge guys because of the mods they can do to them. I love mine, so much quicker for a recovery than the low mounts and you can clearly see the drum and cable. You can still get bars to suit if you look around. I would love to replace my cable with a rope, but its so expensive for 40-50m that the winch will take and seems stupid to not fill the drum (i.e. use 30m).
