Doctors referred me to have a sleep test done.
I know there's a few guys on here with these CPAP machines, we'll see after what the results are....
Booked in for Friday afternoon to get connected up for the night, have to pay in advance, just been told its $485....!!!

Ok, get $285 back on Medicare, but WOW.

What have others paid?

I don't sleep well a the best of times, this is going to Jeep me awake even further!!
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

KingBilly

Don't know a single person who has gone for a sleep test and not come away with a CPAP.  Good luck.

Those tests IMWO suck. The one I had did

Your in a strange bed, usually a narrow Shitty rock hard horsepiddle bed with 50000 wires and probes all over you in a typically freezing cold hospital ward, and your  supposed to have a good night sleep. ??? ???

Seems like they wire you up at the clinic, (have to shave and wear pyjama or other night wear) then cone home and go to bed.
Also thought I would have to spend the night there, but apparently I have to take back all the stuff the following morning.

I had my test at the hospital and like Lost said, they expect you to have a normal night sleep with all the wires attached and knowing someone is sitting in the next room watching you via nighvision camera.

Having said that, I now use a CPAP machine and it has been a tremendous help with quality of sleep and how alert I am during the day.

I don't have a battery pack for it so when travelling on motorcycle or on CT I can't use it and notice the difference on those days.

My opinion - well worth the test and I'm glad I have one now; despite King Billy's thoughts ....

I had my test before CPAPs were all the go. Instead I had expensive, intensive and painful surgery  :'(. I saw a new model CPAP just recently, didn't scare me nearly as much as some of the larger, older units. I have heard good things about them.

Snore Australia does it on bulk bill - I spoke with the consultant in one of the Qld offices the other day - this was the info from her.  She assured me it was no out of pocket expense.   Looks like they are in Qld, NSW and Tas for bulk billing, and some other states for private patients.

Full carby replacement. Nose bored and ported, throat widened and tightened, pallet trimmed, tonsils out, adenoids gone, other bits removed, uvula etc.

I used to snore like no ones business. Dropped 25kg, put 10 back on, but according to the person I share a bed with, I don't snore anymore. Could have something to do with not smoking anymore as well.

For sure that will help.

I snored until I lost weight too.

My theory seems to have some merit!!

I had my adenoids taken out and two nose re-bores when I was a kid, nose is still faulty, all it does is keep my sunnies in place  :D

Wife said I stopped snoring, after dropping some kilos. Put on a few more, back to snoring...... apparently.
But have to admit, theres quite some merit in that statement Dazzler.

Wife gets worried when I sometimes stop breathing during sleep. It kind of freaks her out.
Some other issues with sleep, but hoping the 'sleep test' will show a bit more.

Nothing better to motivate you to lose weight than a heart attack. Been there, not going back.

Been on CPAP for years, test was done in hospital, they sent me to the dietician afterwards so that was a great help. Tests showed I stopped breathing about 90 times. If you're travelling overseas on a long flight make sure you advise the airline and take your machine with you. There's limited seats in the plane where you can use it but you'll travel a whole lot better.

I have sleep apnea, in fact I have 2 separate types. The common or garden variety is called obstructive sleep apnea where the muscles that hold the tongue in place relax when you go to sleep and it drops back causing an obstruction in your throat and choking you, this where you stop breathing untill your brain realizes that your blood oxygen levels have dropped, wakes you up and you start breathing again. This can happen repeatedly (sometimes 100's of times) during the night, but you DON'T KNOW IT so you wake up tired.

When you have a sleep test you won't have a good nights sleep, I know but what the hell, you're not sleeping properly anyway .

If you have to have a cpap machine don't complain about the cost or the inconveniance, you are lucky to have been diagnosed BEFORE you went to sleep while driving a motor vehicle, your blood pressure will drop, you will be less prone to having a stroke or heart attack, you have probably added 10 years to your life, your quality of life in general will probably improve and you may even save your marriage ( which may or may not be a good thing :cheers:
