Maxtrax query

I can see how useful the knobbly plastic thingies can be to get you out of a bog/sand etc (though I have never understood why a couple of metres of knobbly plastic can cost nearly $300).
However . . . do Swaggers carry two of them, or is four the recommended number? I ask mainly for budget reasons.

Recommended??? Don't think there's such a thing.  Most would have 2 unless you're going for the out right toss pot look!

Just 2 but I haven't had to use them in anger. I have a pair of Treds and Bigjules sells Mallee tracks both are cheaper & the Treds are Aussie made

We carry one pair, as do most of the people we go out with, used them several times, only once to get us out of trouble though.

2 for me as well  i just stick them under the wheels that are first in the direction of travel . i.e front wheels for a foward recovery etc

the only time i have had to use 4 was at exmouth when i loaned my 2 to a guy stuck in the sand at the creek crossing, reson being is that he had to first go in reverse with the camper still on and this seemed to need more momentum to push the camper backwards hense the need for 4

I have 2 but about to buy 2 more.

I have a LC200 towing an Ultimate, and while 2 work well, 4 will be more peace of mind with 4.  A lot of R&D went into maxtrax, and I have no problem with the price of them...

Just back from 10 days on Fraser Island, and the maxtrax cae in very handy...

Hi,

As my Cub Escape wheels track is wider than my challenger wheel track by approx 100mm in each side of the Challenger wheel track.

I decided 2 x sets (4) MaxTraks would be the safer way to go if we got stuck in the sand with the Cub attached.

As yet they have not touched the sand, I had no problems at all on the recent Fraser Island MySwag trip on Fraser Island.

BUT there is a VERY soft patch of sand on Inskip point, the last 100m before you were on hard ground, The challenger was working hard to get through, and we only just made it.

There are newer 'imitations' of this product that are cheaper in price.

Not sure if they are better or worse, but I wonder how complex a piece of plastic with knobs on it can be?

I have 2, but if I was setting up to travel around Australia I would get another 2 just in case.

I only have two, however last time I was really stuck I had to borrow my mates set and use all 4 to get out. When I get around to it I think I will invest in a second set.

I have 2 sets that were virgins till a few weeks ago. I was towing my Tvan on very soft sand and got stuck at 14 PSI going up a dune.

I quickly dug out the sand in front of the 4 driving wheels and inserted the Maxtrax under each wheel. I just drove out. I actually could not believe how easy it was.

I got them at Rays outdoors. They occasionally have a 25% off everything sale and being a member gets you an additional 7%. They were about $210 a pair. I highly recommend them based on that experience in sand.

Many thanks for the interesting replies. I had not known there were so many variants of the tracks around. Have seen some cheapies. but not impressed with (lack of) quality.
I have been in touch with Jules about the Mallee Tracks, and am leaning towards them. I find the bag a useful feature.

Where do people store their Maxtrax on/in their vehicle?
I want to store on some roof bars, but will need some sort of locking mechanism.
Anyone store them like this? And if so, do you have a security method?

I've got 2 Maxtrax mounting pins attached to the roof bars and a cable lock through one of the pins, like this:

I didn't bolt the pins through the bar though.  I made up a couple of brackets.
Also I didn't mount all 4 pins, only 2, as trying to line them all up with the Maxtrax holes at the same time was like a Chinese puzzle. (Can I say that? Racist?  )
I'll post up some pics of my set up tonight to make more sense of my dribble. It's not 100% theft proof... more of a deterent.

I keep ours on the roof - I made a rack to hold them. For security, I thread a bicycle cable lock through the hand-holds, and then down through the roof basket and around the rails. The rails are an integrated part of the car (bolted down through the roof from the inside). I'm aware of the security limitations of the basic bicycle lock, but figure that even if it doesn't make mine perfectly safe, it would make someone else's more attractive.

Only lock them up when staying someone for a while with other people around, or when leaving the car with them attached.

Definitely worth having an easy access method of securing them on the roof...If you are going to carry them there...

I had one bounce off my rack (it was not secured at the time) on Fraser recently, and it happened to hit the edge of the windscreen - oops major crack!  2nd windscreen in 3 weeks on that trip

So make sure they are secured!
