Well today I have officially closed down my carpentry business. Thursday I go to Centrelink to apply for newstart while I look for a new job.  Sadly business just hasnt picked up, and enough was enough. Now all I need to do is find a job!
This is the first time in 21 years that I have been unemployed..... :S

Fingers crossed ...

Cheers Chippy :S

Sorry to hear that you had to close your business but at least it was on your terms.  I hope you find something real soon!

A change can be reinvigorating. I am on a sabbatical from IT and love what I'm doing now. If only it paid...

That is so true I had a change at the start of the year from childcare (almost all I'd done, some retail) to banking a huge change and not one I had really planned but it has been fantastic and refreshing to have something new.

Hi Mate,
I'm sure, with the skills you've picked up along the way you will be able to turn this into a positive.
Depending on how far outside of the box you want to look and how far outside of your comfort zone you want to step, there are many options out there for you.
I wish you all the best in your search for employment in the next chapter of your life.
You don't use magic to disappear, all you need is a 4wd & a Swag ;)

I am willing to have a go at most things .....

Not sure there is much in construction around, however I do have experience in transport, hospitality, and landscaping. I have considered a move to the mines, however the more I look the more confused I get ...

If I could afford the time and money I would go back to school and become a teachers aide or something ....

Cheers Chippy :D

geez mate we have a lot in common. I also had my business shut down. I've been out of work for about a month. I'm looking at getting into something else and like you I am venturing into the unexplored and it's been around 20 years also since I've been unemployed. It's all a bit scary actually especially when you have three young kids.

I was also looking into the mines. Just trying to line up a few tickets at the moment and are trying to get my foot into construction and hopefully go from there.

Good luck with it all mate and keep us updated

Not sure about QLD but in NSW there are incentives for trades people to become teachers, might be worth a look.

I was thinking a few days ago, about starting a new thread nd asking the mods to make it a sticky, called the job board.
we post up wat we need and what we can offer.

I know aD4D was looking for some help in electrical
as am I when it comes to wiring in a new extractor fwnheat lamp in the bathroom Reno.

Plenty of space for camper trailer storage and set up. Swap a halt hour job for a few nights free board here with power. Cheap stay for any tourers passing by this way.
canshow sonegreat local fishing/diving spots.
Cheap ffr me,cheap tor you.
Friends made.

Good option.
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

brickiematt

Sorry to hear that chippy. I can imagine its a scary prospect looking for work at the moment. All the best of luck mate.
Cheers

Lost Dog

Gday Chippy,
Drop into your local TAFE. Two mates of mine were in the same position-one an electrician, one a panel beater/spray painter. As they were qualified tradies TAFE took them on, trained them to Cert IV training, and now they train apprentices. The panel beater is making similar to when he was on the tools. Not sure about the sparky. They both say that because the tradies and good trainers have gone to the mines, there isn't anyone around to train the young ones.
Hope this helps
Cheers
