Does anyone use their Max Trax??

I don't want to start a full-on brawl but:

HAS ANYONE ACTUALLY USED THEIR MAX TRAX (or similar) IN ANGER? And - how did they go? Did they work the way you thought they would or did they start to deteriorate/melt due to the heat, etc.?

I'm interested to know how many ever get off the roof racks and get dirty or are they a bit of eye candy??

I must admit I've never struck a blow with mine. Seem to just take up room, but I can't bring myself to leave them at home - I'm sure that the first time I do will be the first time I need them!

I used scoot's in anger about three days ago when I got bogged up to the eyeballs at Vrillya Point.

They did what they were supposed to do, can't ask for more than that.

What do you use them for? I thought you just strapped them to your roof to look cool?

i've used mine and a few mates Maxtrax well over a dozen times now helping extract peoples bogged vehicles on the beach, if you use them correctly you won't damage them, but give it a heap of right peddle and you'll melt the lugs off of them real quick. i've only ever done sand recoveries with them, and IMHO that's where they work best.
the trick is to deflate the tyres more first as usually people are bogged from running the wrong pressures. engage lowrange and slowly accelerate to avoid wheel spin, once the wheels grab you will feel the vehicle lift up and start to move, then once on top of the Maxtrax you accelerate more and away you go. i've seen several sets get the lugs melted on them, each time it was someone not listening to the stop spinning your wheels instructions they were getting and they just kept gunning it.

Ha Ha... Same last year, same place I bet - up the top around where you camp? Anyway the trax were great in that case.

Yep on a simpson crossing last year they work fantastic ,but like everyone say's ,DONT spin ya wheels or you'll bugger em real quick

Yep couple times in he sand. Got stack on Fraser getting back on the barge with the camper in the soft stuff. The missus got the the s...s when she had to find them in the sand then walk about 400m with a dingo watching licking its lips. Haven't tried them in the mud yet but the secret I found in the sand (common sense) is clear the ground, gently ease the power and put some coloured rope on them so that you can find the dam things.

yes, and I will know where they are when I need them too

Having a bag made up so they are easy to store 'if' ever get used
and then I don't have to clean out the inside as well as the outside too

Had mine about 4 years.....used about 3 times.....unlike most ppl only have used them in mud. Dig them in well on not to steep an angle, tyres lowered and turn the wheels as slow as possible and Bobs your mothers brother. With 4x4 weighting in at near 3.5T, Muddies and Lockers get you bogged in a spectacular fashion when it does happen.....won't be parting with my MAXTRAXs.

I don't have Maxtrax, but I have a similar (cheaper) version that is actually FRP grating. It can be purchased under a few different names including www.gratemates.com.au

I have only used them once, but they saved my 60 from certain loss..........

Thanks, they look perfect. Have used metal grates a few times over the years but are a bit hard to carry. What sort of money are they?

I bought a whole sheet and then cut it up to make 8 tracks about. The sheet cost me $500 from a company in Hobart. I have since found out that you can buy offcuts from them. 

They are approximately 300mm wide x 1200mm long and 25mm thick. The local ARB has them in a dark green colour but 38mm thick. I didn't see what brand they were or how many $$.
