Transport costs for campertrailer...wow!

Hi chaps,

Thanks for all responses.....well the short of it is that the trailer is being delivered to the transport mob today....should leave Brisbane on Wednesday and arrive in Darwin either Monday or Tuesday next week

Sue at Jimboomba was a big help and got onto to few companies on my behalf just to speed things along.  I had on company finally get back to me this morning with the cheapest quote of $1100...sounds great, however I spoke to them Friday 2 weeks ago and got back today....thats more than a full working week just to tell me the cost.  That doesn't fill you with confidence, if thats how long the quote takes imagine how long it may take for the trailer to be delivered

The most expensive - $3600, the cheapest $1100, what I went with $1980.  What I did find through this process was:
- companies took a long time to get quotes to you if at all!
- companies were very reticent to give you date as to when the goods would leave their yard;
- every single company bar one told me they were very busy and or short staffed;
- the cheapest quotes needed the longest lead time, that is it would be at least 2-3 weeks from when you book to when they could get the trailer on their truck.

Anyway, I'll let you know how it goes and send some pics when it arrives.  Cheers!

Also something to check out - the insurance part of it.

Are they insured or do you have to insure it yourself.

I have to admit that as a tradie I find people expectation of turn around times for quotes a little skewed. I have people ring up the next day for a price. It takes time to work things out, and Im quite often working on more than one quote. I have to quote at night as I'm working during the day. And sometimes it is the last thing you feel like doing after a long day on the tools.
Id be happy to wait a week for a price.  I hope you get your new trailer soon ...

I got my final qoute today 1k Brisbane to Tennant Creek. Will take 3 or 4 weeks, but thats ok.

I know all about qoutes/tenders. You can spend a lot of time doing them, only to not get the work

and out of the 20 you do, you may get 2-3 jobs out of it.

Yeah no worries Chippy I hear you, but I think your situation is a little different from what is being discussed here.  I'm guessing you probably work for yourself and each and every job you look at may be very different with many variables to consider ie location, materials, access, impact on other related trades (will it involve a sparkie, or tiler or specialist core cutter etc).  This is different, this is companies that have an administration section or at least a couple of people in the office, they run the same routes every week and they claim to be specialist car carriers, so the only real variable is the distance to be travelled and the size and weight of the vehicle, if they need a week to work that out then they have some problems I reckon!

When you get your trailers, inspect underneath for forklift damage before accepting delivery. There was a pretty horrific thread on here about it not long back.

TRy John Perry Transport. He transported my Ct from Melbourne all the way up the East coast then to Darwin. I paid Ezytrail $2400 and John Perry only got $900. When I picked it up I had a long chat with him and I will only use or recommend JP for any transporting of large items to Darwin from the Eastt coast

Yeah thanks for that mate, but too late for me to take advantage of as I have already committed to a company.  Hopefully it will get here on time and undamaged.  I';ll post up when I pick it up and let you know how it goes!
