We made the mistake of filling up our water tanks at Port Augusta before heading up the Oodnadatta Track. Water is far from great. Heading to Ayers Rock in next couple of days.  How have others found the water there?

Very smooth trip through the Oodnadatta towing our Jayco Flamingo. The route through the Painted Desert was a bit rough in spots but no dramas.  We enjoyed an overnight stay at Arckaringa Homestead. Only ones there. Shared a goodly number of red wines with the farm manager over a campfire. Farm is being sold and will be mined - mainly for coal.  A bit sad especially as they have had high stock numbers over last few years.

Farm Manager reckons will have pulled house and buildings down in six months. There were three geologists camped further out on the farm.

From memory the water was fine at Yalara camp ground. We used for cooking and a bit of drinking. we also carried bottled water just in case.

When I was there I went to the supermarket and bought 120 litres of spring water and poured that into the camper.

We just flew out to Uluru last weekend for a couple of nights without the kids, we weren't camping but the water at Yulara was fine. It did have a different taste to what we are used to in Sydney but we got used to it pretty quickly. You won't have any problems with it.

Thanks guys. Set up now at Ayers Rock Campground and water is 100% improvement on Port Augusta.  Can make a decent cup of tea or coffee without having to use bought water.

//Bottoms up to waste water!

Gavin King in the Northern Territory News wrote recently that Yulara residents and tourists will be the first in Australia to drink recycled waste water as part of a $1.3 million project. Effluent will be treated and pumped underground in a 10-year cycle before a third and final treatment makes it suitable for drinking.

The process includes:
•A multifaceted initial treatment including disinfection to produce a high-quality effluent;
•Pumping of water underground where it is treated naturally over 10 years;
•Final treatment using reverse osmosis before it is used as drinking water.

About 250 megalitres of treated waste water is expected to be added to the existing groundwater system each year. Power and Water Corporation Water Services general manager Darryl Day said the water would be strictly monitored in partnership with the Health Department.

"In 2002, the effluent treatment used for irrigation was stopped after we took a health risk assessment," he said.

Parliamentary secretary Malcolm Turnbull has recently announced three Territory water grants, saying "A really key part of the Yulara project is the demonstration value...It can be a really good working example of what can be done in arid zones and possibly transferred to other areas."

Cheers ( sorry, cheers is probably the wrong thing to say).

Thanks Roversmith, well sort of. We have travelled a bit overseas and often heard stories about how many times the water we were  drinking has been recycled. I guess that makes sense here at Ayers Rock as well given that there is not a lot of water around here.

Left Sydney on 26th April across to Port Augusta and then up the middle via Oodnadatta fine every day with warm days and cool nights. perfect.
