It must be a trait that spreads throughout anyone in the electrical/electronics game.

I frequent the Phased Electrical Forum. If anyone makes a slight error everyone jumps up and down saying they are wrong, read the rules blah blah blah, anyone who does DIY is a mass murderer hahaha. Everything has to be backed up by a Wiring Rules clause number or Australian Standards volume otherwise its the end of the world.

Heaps of good technical data is the only reason I go there, good fun for a laugh though.

Yes, but the difference with that forum is that people are staking their reputations and livelihood on that information.  If you reckon something is the way it is, you had better be prepared to back that claim up with evidence.

Being an electricians forum you would expect people who post there to be able to find a clause in the Wiring Rules, if they can't they aren't much of an electrician are they?

The other thing that a lot of non-electricians don't really understand is that the Wiring Rules are written into state legislation, ie, they are law.  If they aren't followed you are breaking the law, and electricians can, have and will be prosecuted in a court of law for not following them.

Mock all you like, but it is serious stuff.

Best advice is give no advise, then when the stupid bastard stuffs it up, they can't blame you. AS 3000 the electricians bible is writting for Lawyers by Lawyers, They make a simple rule so god dam complex just so they can prosacute you. By the way new edition coming out later this year. ???

As a motor mechanic by trade I often wonder what it would be like if our industry was so heavily regulated, just imagine none of you blokes being allowed to work on your vehicles, might have kept me in the game  Not trying to start a war but it probably will, just wondering

Correct, many sparkies bring house 240v wiring rules into the 12v low voltage world and hence the confusion they cause......Not a hit at sparkies in any way but they are different worlds. With 12v there are many, many ways to achieve a results and they are not nessesarily wrong, there just maybe a better or more efficient way but it's not nessesarily wrong, hence the arguments.

Very true.  The other thing is there is no such thing as the 'perfect' setup.  Everyone has different needs, so everyone's setups should be different.  Some people struggle with that.

I still want to know if by routing the vent tube, that features on some styles of battery (mine) to the outside of the battery box is sufficient
Otherwise i need to change the box I'm mounting to house the batteries as its sealed, hadn't considered the build up of flammable gas. I hadn't considered routing the tube until I read the thread  :-[
So feel free to offend me  ;D  or offer advice  ;D

Its not what is said, its how it is said and then everyone jumps on the bandwagon! It is not a very friendly site by any means. Unless you are in the "in" group there is very rarely friendly banter. Doesn't bother me though, as I said I just get on there for some tech info and reading other's experiences.

No-ones reputation/livelihood is at stake. It's an internet forum, if you are relying on it to get information that will make or break your business (or protect others from electrical hazards) then you have a problem (not directed at you).

I also wouldn't judge someone's electrical ability on their ability to pinpoint clauses in the Wiring Rules hahaha!!!

Anyway, this is how the electrical threads go pear shaped. Enjoy your camping! (it will be a few months before I can get out there again  :'()

There are a number of members who have their full business name and real personal name out for all to see, that would be putting reputations on the line in my books.  There are also a number of members on that forum (and also on this one) who know my real name and where I work.  That is why whatever advice I give, I'm sure about it.

I'll think we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

Anyways I'm going camping this weekend! Yeehah!
