He says: I would not have gotten stuck except my Jeep floated and the wheels were not fully on the mud/ground.

I say: You would not have gotten stuck had you not been such a yahoo idiot and checked the depth first and also not driven in so fast and without a water bra.

Yep, that guy is an A-grade tool who has no idea about 4WDing or life in general.

He has no respect for his car at all and doesn't deserve to own a nice Jeep like that.

Interestingly enough, I actually thought that portable hitch-mounted winch was about the only good thing I had seen in his videos. What specifically is wrong with it? Is it purely the questionable safety?

Check out his other videos while you're there, he really has no idea whatsoever....

A mate drove through some water in Maroochydore when it was flooded last week in a new jeep hemi last. He reckons it was 2/3rds up his wheels.

Jeep spluttered, drove home, next day jeep spluttered more...............................

Quote for new motor pending. No warranty by the dealer because it was being driven through water and still waiting on insurance..................

He could have used that snorkel system.........................

Not to mention any respect for the kids in the car or their safety/wellbeing.

I'm more interested in the "portable" Warn winch

How does it fit to tow bar and I assume the front too ? ?

anyone seen one fitted, or for sale somewhere ? ?

Google it Mainey there are a few different ones, they are an off the shelf item and fit into a hayman style towbar receiver.

You need to buy a cradle, http://www.dnaoffroad.com.au/products.php?product=Detachable-winch-cradle

And then fit what ever winch you like

I guess that is one Jeep that won't catch fire ;D

So.....can anyone confirm why the portable winch is a bad idea?

I thought it looked like it could be handy?

It's not a stupid question ( or is it ?? ) but don't all 12v electric winches work under water ???

I would have thought the electronics would be waterproof  :-[

Reason I'm asking is I'm in the market for a 12v portable winch
What are the good things to look for on a 12v portable winch ?
(other than light weight)

Seals are the other thing to look for, though if it is portable and not going to live in a bullbar, the seals won't be tested to the same extent.

If you drive your wagon to something like that I'll come and get you, I promise.

I would drive it to there . . .  but not in there  :-[

I don't see any possible enjoyment in driving in mid-door height deep water

but sand .. now that's another situation

Depends how your tow hitch is mounted, you could rip the arse end off your car...

There are several obvious benefits of the portable winch:
Provided you have a hitch, you can winch backwards
You can use it on multiple vehicle, provided they have a hitch(es)
You don't have to carry it all the time, so fuel saving on the school run
It will not get weathered like a front mounted winch will

But there are some clear disadvantages also:
You have to pack it to use it. It's no good in the garage (maybe, but another point)
You need to have suitable attachment points to use it, not usually an issue at the rear as the hayman reece receiver is perfect, but not many people have these on the front of their vehicles anymore, so winching forward could be out of the question
Winches are heavy; imagine this badboy playing with your fridge, food, gear, lunch, kids in the back of the fourby
You have to be able to attach it, that is even if you have the appropriate hitch you have to get the winch positioned properly. I've been stuck where I couldn't reach the recovery points myself

I have been considering the possiblity of setting up a portable winch.  The bar on my Challenger is not suitable for a permanent mount.

Here is one on ebay.

Picking it may not be the best of them, but the picture shows it should relatively easily.
