Jayco Hawk Outback to cape York

In 3 months time I will be dragging my Outback hawk up to cape York, going to take approx 5 weeks from Newcastle up and back.
Has anyone else had their Jayco up there ? If so any probs with it handling it / if yes what failed.
Any info appreciated.

Will handle it all except the OTL......I wouldn't take it on the OTL if it was mine.....

2006 GU4 4.2TDi Patrol with many goodies. Currently no camper but have had a Customline Camper, Kimberly Kamper and Jayco Hawk....Tenting and Swagging it now..

I know of one person who took his to top of cape york , only damage was the step's up into the van ,they were damaged on some boulders other than that they got through ok

As people say a thousand times, drive to the conditions and you can mostly take anything anywhere.
When we were up there last year, the bypass roads were great, to good actually as people drove like idiots at a million miles an hour. Slow down at EVERY dip, slow down on the corrigations and watch out for speeding vehicles, these caused our only damage to our vehicle on our whole three month trip.

WOW, I didn't even know people have taken Jaycos up the cape, presuming the track would kill em.

I thought you would have needed smaller Beefed up heavy duty camper trailers, and presumed Jaycos weren't sturdy enough or too wide.

Anybody ever done the gunshot creek crossing with one, would love to see that kind of footage.

Not something I would do myself with a Jayco, but good luck to anybody who is willing to give it ago.

Beakie,

If you can keep the dust out and you drive to the conditions there is no reason you could not tow the Jayco to the top.
Like Teabag said, do not do the OTL track, not only is it rough and wet it is very narrow in places.
The only problem with this approach is that if you only see the Cape from the Bypass road, so you have a boring drive and miss all the good places and the real beauty of the Cape.
Why not leave the Jayco at Cooktown and use a tent for the Cape?

As mentioned the by pass roads are ok just lower the tyre pressure to absorb corrugations.

I have seen Winnebagos, Hiace camper vans, modified buses and even a Nissan pulsar travel the bypass rds.

In 2003 the northern by pass road was so badly corrugated you could only travel at 40 klms an hour.

Agree, but wouldn't take it anywhere near the OTL.........

I watched a coromal camper go through Cockatoo Creek on the teli personaly i wouldnt. While up the the top there was a Jayco waiting for a new set of springs dont know if they drove like the clappers. IMO i would take a spare incase Murphy visits. Slow right down on the bends corrigations can make you slide to the wrong side. As its a busy road could be ugly. As others have said oncoming di/do workers drive fast.

On last years cape trip we noticed a guy trying to get his Jayco (was an older model) through Canal Creek.  The major problem was the width of the camper, he got it well and truly stuck on the exit of the creek.  Took almost 2 hours to get it out.
