Time For A Replacemant ?

After 16 + years of happy and trouble free 4x4ing in our 62 series I've found myself at the cross roads.  After a 40min @r$e raping from a smiling member of the Qld Traffic Branch  >:( I find myself not wanting to comply to his childish demands but would rather move on to a new project,.........so I need to enter the used car market again ( it's been a while ).

SSOOO.............being a Toyota man for the last 18 years  I'm inclined to stay with the proven product ( besides I've hung so much crap on Nissan owners over that time I can't possable eat that many words  :-[  ). I like the 80 series Cruisers but if I'm going to upgrade I feel the need to skip at least one model, that brings me to the 100/105 series, I want to stay with the live front end and coil springs as I've been known to play a little bit on the odd occasion  ;D  so I think the live front end would suite my driving style better.

I would appreciate any and all feedback from owners of the above mentioned Cruiser models, diesel or petrol, auto or manual, it will all help in our final decision.

All Nissan drivers...................control yourself and play nice  ;D  ;D  ;D

What were his demands?
Is there no way you can hang on to it?

I understand your need to stay with Toyota.
For the same reason, I can NEVER own a Holden ......... ;D

I owned a 60 series with a front Lockrite  locker ( not sure if the brand is around anymore), LPG gas conversion with preflash lubricator system ( very cheap to run), 235 85R 16's Dunlop Adventurers, and all the usual ARB gear that most 4 wheelers would drain their weekly pay into, until the wife threatens you with divorce.  Loved the old FJ 60 and had seen many miles clock up on traveling around Aussie. I had the model with the barn doors

Always had a sentimental soft spot for them, and got my use out of the ole girl before I sold it on.

The Landcruiser 60 series was a great 4x4

JK, having had both live axle and IFS 100s, and also known to "have a go" I can categorically say that the IFS and 5 speed auto combination is superior to the live axle with 4 speed auto or any manual box.

They're both great, but for ease of driving the newer truck is just nicer. Goes all the same places, or not, if you've seen pictures of me stuck everywhere.

Well this is a very sad day ......... I know you have toyed with the idea but never thought you would actually pull the trigger. What ever you go with it's going to need some work to even come close to what you have now.

80 Series ..... old, good suspension options, a few good diesel engine choices, good ones are pricey.

105 Series ...... newer, known issues with both independent and live front axle models, live axle only comes standard with N/A 1HZ, good suspension options.

I am in the same boat with replacing my 80 when the time comes ....... 200 series not so sure.

BigJules .... you know best as allways and there appears to be several different fixes available for this issue now (JK if you buy one you will need these options fitted ASAP 8)) The diff issue I speak of in the 105 live axle is the fact that it's a high mount pinion and they tend to flex  .... even worse in revers .... several mates have busted these !!!! We might just be rough on gear though ;D

Yeah, the problem is that I've been spoilt with the sheer pulling power of the 6.5 but I'd like a better ride quality, most of the 100/105 cruisers are petrol/autos which I could possable get use to but would rather the multi valve turbo diesel ( I seen in person how well yogi's rig hauls arse  :cup:  ), that said I'm not getting any younger so the need to climb that which cannot be climbed is not as great as it was a few years ago.

I think I could live quite comfortably with a IFS front end once I tweak it a bit and then I can also have the much better 1HD-FTE, the search for the right one may take a little while ( mainly because I'm a bit of a fussy bugger ) but I'm sure my new 4x4 is out there.

As a side note the gentleman in the blue uniform didn't like, No1 ..........body blocks
                                                                                       No2 ..........my front seats, with genuine Toyota mounts
                                                                                       No3 ..........my HID high beam only lights
                                                                                       No4 ..........35 x 12.5 x 15 KM2's
                                                                                       No5 ..........improved front drakes, even though there genuine Toyota items
                                                                                       No6 ..........the fact that I was so polite and kept agreeing with him  ;D
                                                                                       No7 ..........that 12 Qld Transport Officers had no issues with any of the above when we were pulled up in a random roadside inspection

If you could find one at the right price an IFS 1HD-FTE would also be my choice if I was going from a 62 Series. (Auto is the only killer for me :'() You will not believe the ride quality off road with the right shocks and springs ..... especially compared to anything leaf sprung ...... lol

Should be able to get the body blocks approved easily enough I did on mine .... as long as there only 50mm or below ?

No 1 and 4 you could just change before you put it over the pits.
No 2 and 5 should be fine - or do you need to blue plate those?
No 3 - is this only for the spotties? Or did you convert the high beams as well?

Surely you can just get it seen by a 'suitable' inspection station and put it to rest?

I'm sure you were more diplomatic than I would have been with No 6.

Sad day to see the 62 go JK.  I have the 105 4.5 petrol auto and am very happy with it.  The fuel economy is not the greatest, but plenty of grunt and easy to drive.  The front diff is a known issue, but I have not had a problem with mine.  Dad has a 1hz in his 105 and it is sluggish to say the least, but known reliability, his has covered near 400k with plenty of hard work and never had an issue with the diff either.

For price you cannot go past the 4.5 petrol auto and you will be well in front for $ to pay for the extra fuel they use.

Couldn't believe what I was reading when I saw this thread. :o

I can't offer any advice with regard to a suitable Toyota replacement, but do think the IFS stigma is fast fading, with the newer round of models now proving some of the myths/beliefs wrong.

I do believe that the 1HZ motor will leave you wanting, and even if turbocharged will cause its own set of problems.

It's a tough situation to be in mate, and I don't envy the choices you are faced with.

Good Luck with your decision.  The 62 would be a hard act to follow.

I have shown many people the video of you climbing "Beer o'clock Hill" and all have been pretty impressed.

Could always drop the chev in it.....

Seriously though is it worth getting temporary fixes and put it over the pits or are you ready for a sea change???

I think it's change time,...................as tempting as a chev powered Audi might be I might go for something a little more conventional this time  :angel: .        Knowing me I'll have the new one for another 16 years  ;D

When i was stationed out at Mitchell a few weeks ago i had a new Pajero diesel auto. Now i hate pajeros, autos and diesels so i wasnt keen but i tell you what, after having that thing for a week i'm in love... i even thought about trading in the jeep for one...
