U-Bute traveller Portable BBQ...safe?

I was given a brand new double canister two burner BBQ...a couple of days later I was told that they have been known to "blow up". Well this little black duck isn't going to fire it up until I've heard from some experienced Swaggers who can share their knowledge in this area. I'm all eyes guys. GG

Thanks Singo. I think it's just a matter of common sense to have proper ventilation and the right sized pots on the burners, as they say on the warning stickers.

I have used mine couple of times as well with no trouble but iv found i cant really adjust the heat down low so i just turn it off when it gets to hot or turn just one burner off but its gold for bacon and egg rolls on the road

Have you heard that the U-bute has blown up... or is it 2 seperate (single) cookers pushed together have blown up?

I've heard many stories of the single cookers blowing up but I think people use pans that are too big and covering the gas canister. What happens is the heat is reflected back onto the gas canister resulting in the canister overheating and going KABLUEY.

Thanks fellas...I guess the operator had a low grey cell count...and now he has a low folicle count and smells really bad!  GG

Yep Ive got one and mine works fine..like others have said use a sensible size pot with it and only light in a ventilated environment

GG - we were on the GRR last July and were in a NP for the evening when about 50 mts away there was an explosion. My wife and I ran over to see a German family with burns, badly singed hair and bits of a butane gas cooker all over the place.  Feeling was that the cylinder wasn't properly on (unsure if there is a locking mechanism) and somehow gas escaped and exploded. As luck had it there were 3 doctors in the NP and the family were treated.

Saw it with my own eyes.

Have used my dual burner butane BBQ a few times now while away and have had no probs and very happy with the cooking results too! :-)

Yes very happy with mine and they are great and handy to use but with any butane gas always make sure it's locked in.

Used mine to cook breakfast every morning for 2 weeks with no problems at all a great little unit

Been using mine for the last 15 months including on our Cape trip last year with no problems.
Like anything, comes down to common sense which isn't all to common now days...

1st one I bought blow up, but as been pointed out...human error!

The can was a bit hard to fit, & the catch/locking mechanism was a bit stiff, but with a bit of the arm muscle, & less of the muscle between the ears, I managed to get it all locked away & fired up
Boiled the billie, & left it running on low to keep the water warm for the stragglers. Mate asked eventually if we were all finished, & he walked over & turned it off. Took about 4-5 steps away from it & BANG
Luckily for him, the injury was having to admit he near had to change his pants!

I'd never used, or seen one used before, & who needs instructions right???

I hadn't turned the pot stand up the right way, so it had been stopping the cannister & mechanism from seating properly. We'd figured because of that, as my mate went to turn it off, some gas had escaped & been ignited just as the flame was going out.
Have never had, or seen one explode since.

So as already pointed out by others, if they're used properly, you shouldn't have any worries.

That is all I use, got rid of my 2 burner LPG - no more fill ups, and have had no problems at all. I love it. If I need to simmer I use my single burner one for that.
It is very economical and I love the hotplate supplied perfect for bacon and eggs for the whole family!!

Waiting for another COTD special.  Dont think worth the 199 price tag, but 50 is ok. (if the wife agrees)

If somebody supplies me with one, I'll happily road test it for them first !!

We have agot one and had no trobles at all. It comes in very handy and portable, instead of using the main gas cook top in the CT. The butane canisters are not that expensive to boot.

I use one as well and never had any trouble. They are perfect for trips without the trailer when you are swagging it.

Mine has now been used a few times mostly in the truck, it is easy to carry and when you pull up for a spell grab some food out of the fridge onto the barby, better than servo food and cheaper than pub meals.

Use the ubuet a lot both at home and on the road. No probe at all and have cooked for quite large groups which takes a while to do.
I only run it about half on each burner which is a good temp for cooking.
They actually have a mark for bbq on the dials so I wouldn't run them past that point
