Well it depends which way you look at it. I have seen these sort of things but they were "how to " something other than get a job in the mines. I can't say I've ever brought anything like that so no idea if the info within is useful and how useful.

Now if this bloke is in the mines and getting the big salary then he shouldn't need to be selling those things anyway you would think. But of course human nature has it that most people are attracted to easy money, it could be just that for him....besides if you have something to sell that a large number of people could want to buy, even if you're selling for a small amount it could all add up pretty quick, and if you only have to write a guide once well I can see why someone would do it. Besides as long as people are getting something for their money it's not illegal or a scam.

So I don't think it's a straight out scam but I would be skeptical on how useful the information is going to be to you personally, and if it's worth whatever the cost is (I'm guessing around $30-$60?

For example if you don't have any skills that apply to mining it might tell you to go to tafe do a course and acquire particular skills...but you already know that anyway! It would probably tell you some common employment agencies to sign up with (ones like Seek for example) which you can probably find online yourself.
Of course the info could be very useful for someone who is not familiar with the industry at all and has no idea where to start. But maybe not so much for someone who already knows a fair amount, is already subscribed to employment agencies but just not having luck.

If you are trying to get a foot in what type of work are you looking to do?

You should note that Mining doesn't necessarily pay heaps more than working a standard job, it's just the hours which add up! For example cleaning or something not particularly skilled, say you got $20/hr, you work 9 days on and 5 days off, 12hr shifts,  in that 2 week period you would have earned 9 x 12 x $20 = $2160 Now in the same 2 weeks if you were working for the same wage on a 9-5 normal 8hr day, 5 days a week, you would have earned $1600.
Skilled jobs can command quite great salaries though! And mining is certainly a lifestyle in itself.

My Hubby is a Surveyor in the mines, he always keeps an eye out at what jobs are going around in his field through various online employment agencies like Seek.  Like others have said you could probably get useful pointers off here rather than buying that guide.

Just say you're a kiwi and you will get a walk up start! Some mines I worked at it was hard for a non kiwi to get a start. Half a million of them over here and I recon half of them work in resources...And they do FIFO from nz now so they can take it all home to in zid eh bro!

I don't have mining experience, but over the years I have picked up a lot of skills, Surveyors offsider with Main Roads, Crane truck operator, Team leader/Trainer with a Green Corps team, Supervisor with Activ none of which gives me tickets.

I have HR licence, 20t forklift ticket, Cat 956 loader ticket, hard-worker etc, so I will have to polish up the resume.

Due to the economic downturn I have to shut down my business and look further afield.

What a crock.  My hubby is in the mines and this just seems like a money making scam.  There is no way that I would touch it with a barge pole.  I'd be suprised if he was even in the mines.

  Have a go Mike, they might require a generic induction, (eg Coal and Metaliferous), but you should be able to claim a bit back on tax. A lot of the mines now use a lot of labour hire groups for contracts, but if you are seen to be a good worker the mine itself might approach you direct.  It's getting a leg in the door to start with.  Lot of blokes I've come across through the quarry here mention the amount of ex woolies trolley pushers given a go.... so it can't be all that hard to maybe get a start.  It not necessarily what you know but who....

When I was in Mackay I did the equiv of MARCSTA, but never went further.
So many of the vacancies are wanting 6mnths experience as minimum but it is the old chicken and egg syndrome 
My biggest problem is that I am not likely to get similar work around here to get that experience.

I will go to Bunbury over the next couple of days with my new CV and chat to the agencies

looking at Seek etc over the last couple of days, I believe I could do Storeperson/Trades Assistant/Drillers Offsider/Survey Assistant.
I have Loader and Forklift tickets and AS2980 welding operator certification ( tho' a bit rusty).
I am sure I will get something eventually, it is just a bit hard to Centrelink help when you have been self employed

One option and properly the most common way into a mining job now days for new / unskilled labour is through a contractor. Yes you do all the crap jobs but you pick up a skill here and there and then if your lucky the mine will poach you off the contractor.

Plus these days people working directly for the mine are not always the best paid or get the best benefits. Most of the larger contractors have had to pick up their game to keep people. So look at the Goldings, Leightons, Downer EDI, Mastermyne, Thesis and any labour hire mob.

Keep an eye on seek.  I know that heaps of work is available in WA at the moment.  Most companies are advertising via seek, and with your current skill set you should have no problems.
