Ray's Outdoors VIP Sales?

Just back from Rays where I 'tested' the 25% off. I bought something small and said at the checkout I thought it was 25% off for VIP members. They said do you have a letter I said no, they took the 25% off anyway. Might go back tomorrow and get a WeberQ

I didn't get that Anaconda one either despite getting the catalogue yesterday LOL. Lucky I know they have nothing I want. They've really done downhill IMO since they started selling little other than their house brands.

Went into rays in cairns and they mentioned unless you got an email that you print out you don't get the 25% off. She advised that they selected VIP that spend a lot of money in the shop.

Any one want to email me the letter so I can get the discount

Interesting, I have spent over $2000.00 at Rays in the last 12 Months and I didnt get a letter, I think maybe its time to look else where.

I wonder what they class as spend a lot.

As a VIP member I sent Rays a message last night asking what was the criteria for receiving the deal as we have spent plenty of money there also.... no reply yet...

Supercheap Group aka SCA, BCF, Rays, Rebel etc are usually pretty sharp with their marketing. I guess they wanted to try something different. For people like Matto it has worked out great for others not so much. I am a regular at my Rays so they gave it to me even when they probably shouldn't have. With the Internet you can't keep anything a secret so everyone knows it is on. There must be a huge rush when they have their discount days as everybody waits for them. I actually like the group, I like their bricks & mortar and online approach. This year I have probably bought more from SCA on their online discount/free delivery days than I have from their bricks and mortar. It will be interesting to see what their next marketing move is.

Well after reading about this I went express to my BCF with a couple of hundred bucks worth of things- xmas pressies and stuff I just want  Anyway, got to the checkout mentioned the promo, the cashier went and spoke to another and returned with "sorry unless you have the letter..." I then said "oh well, too bad" and left my stuff on the counter.

Rang this morning to ask about the promo and why it was for some and not others and was told by the manager that it was the Club BCF (or VIP promo team that sends the emails) that randomly selected 150 VIP numbers each store via computer generation. She even said that some of her employees got the deal!

Anyway, that's the story i got... but no goodies @ 25% off

I've spent about $500 in the last two years but only about $30 in the last year.
Obviously the checkout lady has no clue as to why anyone got he letter.
I got the letter (not email).

In terms of criteria, we took all of our top customers from the database (who had not provided an email address) and randomly sent some of those VIP members the offer.  The intention was to get those members to join the email database as we ensure email members are kept in the know of all our VIP sales and events.

As you are a part of our VIP member email database keep an eye on your inbox and rest assured, we will be sending further offers like this one in the near future. 

If you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us again.

You should email her back and let her know that while there's no doubt those who received the letter are happy, there's plenty of customers who didn't receive it yet know about it and aren't happy. Not exactly a great marketing move IMO.

I sent a reply back to stir the pot a little more and received this reply, my reply email is at the bottom.

"Thank you for your email and I appreciate your honest feedback.

In hindsight, given what we have learnt from this offer we may  have done things differently, these learnings  will be incorporated into future offers. 

Please be assured that there will be upcoming offers in our Ray's VIP email newsletter giving exclusive offers to members of this database.

Thanks for the reply and I understand what you were trying to do and there's no doubt those who received the letter are happy, but there's hundreds of customers who didn't receive it yet know about it and aren't happy. Not exactly a great marketing move when everything that happens is discussed freely on forums.  This topic went like wildfire and a lot of people aren't too pleased with the way it was done.  Hope you have something in the pipeline to counter the bad publicity it has done.

They will never stop doing discounts but more fair next time.

That's true rotare, however, I think the intent of rewarding VIPs is a good one, you just can't pick and choose (that's called discrimination).  Now I'm not saying they're tight wads, but having VIP nights or offering specific discounts to all VIPs has been done before, but this was just an ill-thought marketing ploy.
