The only time i would kill a snake is when i'm quick enough... I'll leave the harmless but as far as i'm concerned, the others are fair game to me, especially now i have kids.
You're better than me Singo, there's no time for pics with me, it's more "quick get a shovel before the *#@# gets away!"

Without starting a word war why are we killing snakes. I hate em.  Scare the pants off me.

BUT

No one has died from a snake bite in oz since they worked out wrapping the limb with a bandage. (anyways, thats what our snake ranger fella says and so did snakeman, or the snake bloke, or whatever his name was at agfest said)  Happy to be proved wrong.

One of our workers was bitten by a Tiger snake the other day, we have real big tigers down here, and was unwell for two days.

We get tigers coming across our paddock down to the neighbours.  Border Collie does not like them and goes a bit strange when they are around.

cheers

I don't kill every snake that crosses my path, But if a brown enters my yard where my kids play, Its chances of survival aren't good. Blacks I'll generally run off, Browns will strike for fun. We are lucky the dog is a quick little bugger or she would have been hit.
The photo was about 10 feet from my back door, right where my kids play.

we get heaps of em on the farm , where we have problem areas like the dairy we lay down fruit tree mesh as we have two young kids ,snakes crawl over it and try to go through it and get stuck we caught 7 yes 7 brown snakes last summer but never a redbelly and we have heaps of them aswell you learn to keep a lookout , now is the time they are active

There was a saying about if you had black snakes you didnt have some other type.  Wonder what the other type was?

Or is that red back spiders and daddy long legs.....

The saying is that if you have black snakes around you'll have no browns. One of my mates is the local snake handler nd he reckons it's bs.

I think the way they (snake handlers) word it is: "No one who was carrying one of these snake bite bandages (available for sale after the show for $20) has ever died of a snake bite". Statistics = numbers looking for an argument. Approximately 3.2 people die each year from snake bite - .410 shotgun is my weapon of choice, but a shovel or plain wire also work well.

I think the only truth to the browns and blacks is that a black snake will eat a juvinile brown and visa versa.  I use to work in Grafton on a farm and have seen blacks and browns within a few days of each other on the same farm (only a 100acres or so).

I think that there is also something about being able to kill them if you are protecting yourself from immediate threat/danger.  I just wanted to point it out as many people don't know that it is illegal, that and shooting kangaroos without proper permits, and could get them selves into trouble if none the wiser.

Yeap BS.  The reason you don't often see them together is because they eat different things and so generally hunt in different areas.  Browns eat warm blooded animals - rats, mices, birds, etc and blacks eats cold blooded animals - frogs, lizards, politicians, lawyers, etc

On the news down here on Tuesday there was snake handler, he mentioned he had been busy over a few days due to the warm weather we had in Victoria!

friend of my sons birthday on weekend, we went over there for the party, and on the fence where I was sitting, the bloke told me that in the bush behind me was where the tiger snake lived... As my poo doors opened like rockets to move me forward he showed me photos on the phone of this snake, and 2 more in his yard in recent weeks, and after a quick google, it could very well have been one.

Crookedpete

Just googled snakebite death statistics in Australia. 58 deaths in 21 years from '79 to '00. See http://www.nchirt.qut.edu.au/consultancy/amdig/workshops/documents/2003WinkelSlides.pdf.

As a forty something male living in Qld who frequents rural areas, I'm in a high risk group.nNo deaths in women between 24 and 55 years old, consistent with my own observations that swmbo will be running for the hills at the mere mention of the s word.

Too scared to google motor vehicle mortality rates. Just been reading The daily rant thread.Pity there isn't an antivenom for some of the fools driving on the roads.

Daz, your handler may have been confusing Tassi with the rest of Aust. From my three years in Queenstown I am pretty sure all snakes in Tassi can be treated with the one anti venom which makes it a quick process when you reach the hospital.  No such luck for snakebite victims on the mainland.  I am with the others, tigers and their other poisonous mates around my house will be turned into two or three snakes so long as I have small children about.  Saw a real nice southern carpet python last week down south at Contos, got out for a few photos, he wasn't fazed and slithered off about five minutes later.  Ten minutes later we disturbed a tiger on the walk track to the beach.

In Gundigai where we had a holiday house we used to get both Blacks and Browns. When the browns came out the blacks would hammer them, they hate them to death and did...Blacks are easy to herd away but as said the browns like to hit out just for fun.. If I have a black around I'll teach the kids to be careful, hopefully they keep the browns at bay.

Not sure what we get over here though. Have only seen a small python..

GLC

those first couple of pics looked more like an Olive Python.  Can have an attitude but in reality just want to go about their own business.  The problem with killing "dangerous" snakes is that most people wouldnt know what snake it is if they fell over it.
3000 reported bites, 300 people needing treatment, 3.2 deaths.  Yet the average snake gets killed in the 1000's because people dont know the reptiles and dont know their temperament.  Snakes generally clear out from humans as we are way too dangerous.
and 20.00 for a snake bite kit???? you cant be serious, tell them they are dreaming and you can get one for about 10.00 easily.  15 if you want a extra roller for legs.

There is no doubt in my mind it is/was a brown. As a reward for helping the blue tongue yesterday I've come across 2 browns today, the first I didn't see and hit with the mowern The second is hiding in the bushes.

the problem is that an Olive doesnt look too much different to a brown.
