2012 trip up through the middle of SA, and into the NT

Hi, we are doing a trip next year from our home in NSW, across to SA, and up through the middle of SA into the NT hopefully all the way to Darwin, does anyone have and great places that they have been and or stopped anywhere along this route that they can recommend, so we can sit down and try and plan our trip out a little before we head off.
