I'm looking at doing a trip to cape york soon for a few weeks.
I know phone reception isn't good, but wondering if anybody has been there and got reception with "optus"?
Thanks

Blue Bravo

You won't get reception after you leave Cairns with Optus.

I thought half the reason to go to these places was to get away from the thing anyway ;D

I agree, But if you must know there is telstra at portland rds, and if you stand on the cliff above vrillia point you can get it there too.

You will need a Telstra Next G Blue Tick phone and then you will need some experimentation.

We pretty much turned our Telstra mobile phone off and put it in the glovebox once we left Cooktown, and got it out again at Bamaga.  You'll also get Telstra mobile reception on the beach at Chilli Beach.

Can't remember wanting to try anywhere else.

i am with telstra and phone reception hit and miss but i was standing at the sign at the tip getting photo taken and the wife rang  ... so it works there

Lots of people bag Telstra but they are the only provider that services the Cape. Any other provider, you may as well turn your phone off when you leave Cairns. Around the towns are the only places you are likely to get reception, although we did get a text come through in the middle of Lakefield NP.

Our satelite phone had coverage wherever we wanted it ;D

Cheers Andrew
Just what i didn't need, another forum and more mods!

We got reception with Telstra on the beach at Punsand Bay - you had to walk to the water's edge though. 10 metres back towards the campsite and it was gone. We also got limited reception at the sign at the tip. Our other phone was with Optus which was useless !!!

gruesome

Have to agree with DaveO, we stayed at Punsand Bay and had reception on Telstra, the others in the group on Optus were bloody useless,
