We went to Bunnings today and purchased one of those fire pits so we thought we would test it out this evening.

We ate dinner around the campfire, then cooked some marshmallows, then tried cooking damper for the very first time in our new Hillbilly Camp Oven.  Overall we had a great night and it was nice to feel that even though we are currently camperless, we can still get the feeling that we are out camping!!

Ready to go in the camp oven:

The End Result:

We still need some more practice as it was still a bit doughy on the inside - but it still tasted great on the edges!!

Sounds good. Looks good.
2 degrees tonight, glad I'm inside in front of the fire. Toasty warm.though therain outside is quite soothing.
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

Looks great JK

The kids would love it, mine requested a damper made with creaming soda the other night, so we gave it a go. A bit sweet for my liking but they loved it with some custard.

We started the same idea a many years ago in our backyard with the kids, started off as a way to have a drink around a fire outdoors when we couldn't get away (both shift workers and on-call).....has evolved to now our 13 year old has his mates bring their swags around some Saturday nights......cook their own dinner and breakfast over the fire......had 7 off his mates last weekend and they slept out in swags at -10 degrees......tuff little buggers.

Well done JKohn, great to see youngsters enjoying themselves like that.  My wife says the damper looks good, but a bit too thick, which is probably why it did not cook properly in the middle.

  great way to spend a saturday night....looked at those fire pits and wondered how they'd go.  I used to have the brazier type and wore it out in the backyard on the weekends cause I soo wanted to go camping.

Great thing about cookin in the camp oven is the challenge...damper looks great!!!

My 4yo daughter is looking over my shoulder as I'm reading this thread asking "Daddy can we have a fire like them boys".
I will have to check them out next time I'm at Bunnings.

Thanks for sharing. I am away from home traveling solo so am missing my lot. It's good to value and think of the important fun stuff!

How much was the fire pit.?

All the ones at our local big green shed were quite a bit on the pricey side.

Thats gold mate, well done! A bit of inspiration there to get outside - it's easy to get cabin fever in Tassie in winter with little kids (2 & 4). Love the idea with the pavers too!

A firepit at home is priceless, we bought one earlier in the year and use it all the time. Next best thing to camping

Looks like a great family night.......... top stuff.

Also just remember it's the little things like this that see our kids grow into responsible adults, with great memories and real life skills......  :cup:

Well done, nothing can beat quality time with family, the pictures tell the happy truth  :cup:
I wish I could do the same,  the shire I live in has full time fire ban, I found this out when we first moved in 10 years ago and I lit a fire in the yard, and the neighbours dobbed me in  :'(
Cheers and  Dave
