Impact Wrench

Hi Guys,
I'm in need of an impact wrench, but what is best.
I have a smallish air compesor and a very cheap impact wrench that is usless, the wrench doesnt have enough torque and the compressor runs out of puff too quick.
I do lots of work on my Land Rover Discovery and am going to be wreaking an old one for parts soon.

G'day Kalex,
First let me say I've never used or owned an electric or 12v type rattle gun, so I'm sorry Ie  can't offer much help there.....

What size compressor do you own?

The average 1/2" drive uses about 6cfm... which will certainly drop the air from the average house hold compressor, however in saying that generally u only give the rattle gun a blast for a few seconds, I'd be trying another el'cheapo pneumatic rattle gun first. I've got a supercheap 1/2' dr rattle gun and can zip all my wheel nuts off a wheel without any drama. By about the second nut the comp' has kicked back in, but still delivers enough pressure to keep the grunt up in the gun.

They need about 90psi to get full torque..... but will still hammer off a tight nut below that, maybe check what pressure ur comp' is cutting out at, wind it up via the pressure switch, set regulator to 85-90psi......... should give u enough excess pressure to get through a few runs of the gun before tank pressure drops below reg pressure.....

Makita, hitachi, dewalt, and believe it or not Panasonic

18v impact wrenches are all well worth their money.

I own both makita and hitachi gear, and it gets flogs everyday.

Hitachi are the preferred brand for the sugar cane shed roofers up north. Apparently if you don't have one it's a long walk to a charger.

I've got 2 Hitachi 18v Impact Wrenches and very happy with them.

18V Hitachi here too, very good, not enough power to get very very stubborn nuts though.

As for air powered, i would recommend Chicago Pneumatic, as long as the air supply is enough, dry too.

I also wouldn't buy from the people in the link, i paid for something a couple of years ago that had free post, then they tried to slug me $250 freight.  asked for a refund and that took about a month, finally getting it after threatening to go to consumer affairs.

If the compressor is one of the little ones from Supercheap etc, that'll be the most of the problem with the impact gun you already have. The regulators on those things are way too small.
Unscrew the reg, fit a T piece and another air fitting that is unregulated and run the rattle gun (and almost everything else) off that fitting.
The little regs won't deliver enough volume. You might not even need a new gun.

Milwaukee and Hitachi are pretty much top of the range.

The Ryobi 18V ones are great too - we've been using about 12 of their tools at work for the last couple of years, and they have been hammered every day with no failure. The big lithium ion batteries last forever as well
