It's been alleged that this young man wasn't their first victim of the night and that they had randomly attacked others.

I just don't get it. What's wrong with kids these days. I never did this crap when I was young, none of my friends did it either.  If we came across someone throwing a cowards punch we would of most likely given them a hiding.

I have two sons that would never do anything like this and have been brought up to know this is a gutless and cowardly act.

I think coward punch is somewhat comical in name.
We need to forgo the PC BS  and call if for what it is "another wanker attack"
Whoever came up with that coward punch crap was obviously never a male teenager.
The other thing they need to do is not let these scumbags that assult and murder people cover thier faces going to and leaving court.
If they knew everyone knew who they were that would have more impact on them and give the public something to identify them by when our useless justice system releases them with a slap on the wrist.

Makes me sick.

There's no honour among these grubs....always pick on someone when in groups .....pack of dogs.

Unfortunately violence in sport is so glamourised, and along with violent electronic gaming we have removed alot of these upcoming generations from reality.
I did ju jitsu for many years, but find the way MMA is glamourised totally abhorent.
I dont know what the answer is, but calling it what it is, a cowards punch is certainly a start.
Also mandatory life sentencing with none of this cry baby I was drunk or drugged excuses.
I feel so sad for the family of the innocent victim.

One of the reports I read, made me believe the young man and his mates were just enjoying themselves, maybe laughing, and the coward came up, said, "do you want to see something funny?" and just punched the young man in the head...

Maybe he was paranoid because he was not having fun, and they were??????

Hard to find any justification for that type of behavior....

A single, powerful punch was often referred to as a "King Hit" which somewhat glamorised this low life, scumbag act of pure violence.  In an effort to better reflect the true nature of this cowardly act, the term "Coward Punch" was promoted in the media.  I think "Coward Punch" is a true reflection of this criminal act that certainly should not be considered tough or justified or something to skite about.

Theres always been dickheads around but since it became trendy to get slieve tats and act tough its out of control

Banjo16

Unfortunately not much good happens after 3am.
In my years driving a taxi I've seen a lot of this Shit,it comes down to alcohol , drugs & testosterone & its happened for years before it was called a coward punch.

I don't think legistration will fix it,drunken idiots don't think about the penalty before they commit the offence. The only thing that works is for them to get the same treatment.

I know how it came about mate but to me its got a leftwing lesbian social worker invented word ring about it.
Im sure all the dickheads that do this laugh off the coward punch thing.
If they didnt it would work.
They need an insulting name with more social conotations..
And public embaressment

Like i said something derogitory and insulting.
Ifvtheres a bunch of kids outside a nightclub and some dick clocks someone and someone yells out "what a coward punch"
It just sounds bloody rediculous to me.
Im sure most australians arnt to precious to put up withvthe word wanker or similar used on the news for good reason.
Or call it for what it is a gutless cheap shot.
Gutless wonder.

Told my boys (11 and 9) this morning that if they ever did that sort of crap they would be in prison and yet I would still find a way to get to them, and do to them what they did to the other person. Heaven help some stupid maggot kid that ever does that to one of my boys, regardless of whether it killed them or not.

The problem is that we are adults - the message gets out to us, but it's not getting to the kids in any kind of meaningful way

I could not care less what the cost is, so long as scum like this are off our streets. Take the money from political advertising funds, ex P.M travel expenditure / office costs, etc, etc,... these clowns do as they please due to growing up thinking punishments for most crimes are pretty light these days. The fact governments have been introducing minimum sentences for crimes like this, is a step in the right direction IMHO.

Very true....   the cash is there to fund the mandatory life sentincing warehousing ....   just has to be channeled away from all the political waste. ...

A young man is dead and gone because of a scum's alcohol-fueled thrill kill....

A witness said the scum said:

"WANT TO SEE SOMETHING FUNNY??"

... before punching the victim directly in the forehead....    That random act could be done to ANYONE. ..

It was reported that he would have been rendered unconscious immediately. ..  after which he fell to the pavement like a sack of potatos --  face forward. ...  Further compounding the head trauma as his forehead bounced off the pavement ...

Trouble is that could be antagonistic & inflame the situation resulting in more punches & more injuries.

Not sure about mandatory sentences but the charges should be upgraded to murder or the very least manslaughter which should carry minimum sentences.

I agree if you hit someone you dont know unprovoked like this and its good enough for a GBH charge and they die its murder im afraid.
Manslaughter is reserved for acidental death or unintended  carelessness
