Dad had a Shindowa on the farm. This was used to knock the grass down around the fences so it didn't sap too much from the electric fence. 100 acres had a lot of fence. It did that for 10 years, then went to live at my sister place where it cops a flogging and is seriously neglected maintenance wise, but it still goes strong.

I have a Komatsu straight shaft which starts 2nd pull and has done a lot of work in the past 12 years.

Before that it was a bent shaft Ryobi, I hated that thing, it must have been Japan's revenge for coming second in WW2. It never wanted to start, but took forever to properly die. In the end the fuel tank split, but the motor was running fine.

12 years ago I picked up a 2nd hand Shindaiwa T250 straight shaft. Other than a fuel cap, primmer button and a spark plug. It's never missed a beat.
Pull it out of the shed, knock the mud wasp nest out of the exhaust, top up the stale fuel with fresh and off we go.

For the areas around garden beds and crushed rock paths. A little 18v Makita does it with surprising ease.

When/if the Shindaiwa dies. It's a toss up between a Stihl combi tool, another Shindaiwa or Makita's 36v straight shaft beast.

So answer me this. I want to know if it's true. When i was looking, I was told that straight head trimmers have a reversed gearbox so you cut working backwards and the angled ones you cut working forwards?

Was looking at Hondas, Stihls and Shindawa's at the time after drop kicking my Ryobi one too many times. I ended up with a Honda 4 Stroke bent shaft. Engine is beautiful (if you get the start procedure right) but the bump head is already Shitting me. At least it's easier to add like than the Ryobi

This is correct, I just went to a honda straight shaft and it spins the other way, it took a few hack jobs on the yard before I got used to it

Try pulling the cord with to side and it will spin the correct way

Yes you need to be aware that line trimmer style are more useful than brushcutter style for edging lawns around home and that's largely to do with the handle setup whereby you can easily roll the line trimmer over on its side for edging work, whereas the handlebars are better for clearing, albeit both are best used with a shoulder strap at the right height or you'll soon tire holding the weight. Apart from the heads and blades you use trimmers and brushcutters are essentially the same animal but you need to decide on what handles for what task you do most-

52cc motor with full crank.  Straight shaft.
7 different options for the cutter, including two line trimmers (one bump feed, one just clamp the line type.)
Haven't heard of 'Ozstar' before.

I had a.Victa branded  Shindawa 2 Stroke straight sharft it had a hard life and never missed a beat only ever replaced the fuel primer bulb and fuel pick up line.
when i finally replaced it i worked out it was 31 years old

Run a 4 stroke Honda straight sharft now
