I guess it depends on whether you go of the cars trip computer telling you an estimated L/100km or go by actual figures after you fill up, empty, then fill again.

i just go off my ute's trip computer telling me the average consumption.  i don't see why that's such a bad thing.

but then i get mocked for having the hide to post such a supposedly absurd number...

i guess that's what happens in forums sometimes...

I wasn't having a go at you personally mate. Sorry if it sounded that way. Its just that the trip computers do throw out some interesting numbers sometimes.

Likewise Paceman, I wasn't having a personal dig, but the trip meters in many cars are not particularly accurate.

The only way to accurately calculate fuel economy is to fill up, drive til tank is near empty and refill. Work out how many Kim's are travelled & how much fuel was used.

The more distance you travel, the more accurate the calculation.

I just completed a 3000km trip. The last tank is the only one I calculated and is 10.5L/100kms. This was all cold weather. Around 10 deg C average I'm guessing. Therefore minimal air con use but lots of hills.
On a hot trip unfortunately averaging about 40 deg C I got around 12.5. Probably <200kg heavier that trip.

The hot trip I got a 14.5 when I wasn't paying any attention to keeping the torque coverter locked.

Makes a noticeable difference to your range.
