Hi

Aldi have some 4wd specials this Sat.

https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/saturday-24-august-2013/

I'm interested in the 150L air compressor and possibly the recovery tracks (maxtrax clones).

What do others think of these items and their value? Just curious.

Goose.

Will let you know when I check them out, some stuff they have is "what you pay for products" but I must admit if you don't expect them to be "what a contractor would use" you can get by quite easily.
Any thing that needs to be a bit heavy duty and it doesn't look it, don't get even though there seems to be a good warranty... personal choice in the end.

Mace

Can't remember seeing these 2 products at Aldi before, I may be wrong.

Their gear is generally good. I have the puncture repair kit, same quality as other kits for about half price. We have a kitchen full of their "stuff".

One of the props with living in tassie now, no Aldi.  I'd be giving the compressor a go if I had ready access to a store.

Be careful with the Auto Worklight.  Bought one from Aldi about 2 years back and on our first trip I had it plugged in charging on the back seat  while travelling and the next minute we smelt a rubber burning smell and picked up the light and it was extremely hot and then it started smoking.  We had to quickly throw it out the window. Yes, we picked it up once it had cooled down and put it in the first bin. Luckily I had not had it plugged in somewhere where we would not have noticed the smell.
It may have not been the exact same type as advertised, but it looks similar and was the same price.  That was on the start of our 3 month trip. so I did not get a chance to complain to Aldi, quess I should have.  :-[  Kevin

I am no expert but I think the first good wheelspin on the recovery tracks would render them almost useless.  BCF had 800mm Treds on sale last weekend for $150

We've had a set for over 3 years now.  Grip well to the carpet and nice and deep to catch all of the kids spills!  The rear ones can hold the contents of a can of coke without a spill...

For $129, do I get one of these for the Prado and paint it black...

Why not? A bit of etch prime and some satin black and you would probably have spent more on paint.
But have a look at it and see what you think, I doubt you could go too wrong for $129.............

Or strip it and drop it off at a powder coater.  Satin black is massively common, so you shouldn't get charged much.

Some of the gear is OK and I have some items but for me I would not want to be on the side of the Oodnadatta Track with a roof basket in half a dozen pieces because it wasn't up to the task. If a compressor fails you borrow someone else's but a roof basket and all the items you have stored there generally because they won't fit anywhere else.......

I really do not know how well they will perform, however each track weighs 4Kg vs 3.6Kg for Maxtrax. If relative weight is an important indicator of durability they appear OK.  Lighweight cr#p they do not appear to be.

yes, but they are HUGE!!!! although, they look like they would actually work well with using as a shovel in sand etc.....

I did however pick up one of the led worklights. Now in the shed and works great. I really like the blackout funtion.  EG: if its on charge and you have a power outage, after 5 seconds or so it automatically turns on. kinda cool really.

One of my mates went to his local Aldi store 1 hour before opening time Saturday morning. When he arrived he was the 30th person in the line, so by the time he got to the section with 4WD specials, most of the stuff was already in other people's trollies.

Right or wrong about quality, Aldi do very well at marketing specials.

achjimmy

Yeah I happened to be dropping number 2 at cadets one morning and went to the aldi at opening at 8.30 (wanted a angle grinder) by 8.35 people were complaining because the mowers were all gone! One pallet of there special sale item and its gone in 5min WTF, doesn't sound ethical to me.
Here for a good time, not a long time!

Agree, the worklight is a ripper. We us it camping, throws plenty of light and recharges off the 12v overnight !

I picked up the 150l compressor for $99.  Haven't opened it yet but the TJM one was half the volume and more than double the price.  Guy standing in line said he bought it last time it was on special and reckons it is great.  Hope so  :D
