I think the early Suzuki eg lj80 should be considered.I bet people just remembered them bouncing past everyone and everything, off road anyway.
I remember in the early 1980's one of these 2 stroke models going up the old CREB track then the old dirt track to Cooktown in real slop.

I used to watch the rentals on Fraser Island, wow what incredible 4x4's, through salt water up to the bonnet, over rocks at full speed, tipped on their side. Must be great trucks!
How is education supposed to make me feel smarter? Besides, every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain. Remember when I took that home winemaking course, and I forgot how to drive?  (Homer J Simpson).

Series 1 Landrover shorty, only the climate control left a little to be desired... whatever the climate was doing on the outside it was the same on the inside.

You'll need to watch this to get the best out of your landy

I have yet to come across any 4wd that is really built for heavy or rough country as it come from the factory.  I bought a workmate, but took the springs off and put 400kg Rockcrawler springs on, took the shockies and steering damper out and replaced them with Old Man Emu, then welded 25mm weld mesh right across the bull bar, it was almost ready for serious country.
My son is using it at the moment, but when I habve a chance, I will talk him through some further work on it, although I am not allowe tro drive for another 20 months (medical reasons).

Gu patrol 4.2 turbo series 1 and 2 (pre intercooler and electronic pump) would top the list. It is reasonably comfortable, has reasonable cabin space. Topped off with a near bullet proof drive line and plenty of grunt...

Somewhat surprised at the lack of love for the 60 and 70 series.

Mind you, I think it is hard to beat a GQ.
Do not PM me for technical advice - start a thread.

Sorry, but not enuff ground clearance in factory trim to be considered alongside any of the listed vehicles
Many a 4wder cursed the day these vehicles were allowed off the bitumen, and with good reason. More than once I've been stopped on a flat sand track by one of these, simply because they were hung up on the diffs & body on the centre of the track.
