It's only a (Not) free camp if they find you ;D
I got a sweater for Xmas, really wanted a moaner or screamer.

Silvo

Is this just talking about the sites in local council areas and not necessarily the sights in parks etc though?

All good and well free camping , thing is what do want for nothing ! A rather disturbing letter in last weeks Longreach Leader from a Kerith Buckingham of Mt.Eliza Vic which was all about how dissapointed he was at the overcrowding at the FREE campsite 4klm from Longreach on the Thomson river , this freeloader seems to think that local ratepayers should subsidise his tourist [read terrorist] travels by providing large and maintained FREE campsites with all the trimmings of a caravan park including showers and toilets for free ,

No Mystq, not Silvos loss, our gain.

There are heaps of free camp sites that those Councils have no control over. If we avoid their towns and their Caravan parks, their businesses will suffer. There would probably be a rapid return to the "how do we attract camper business rather than shun them?" attitude.

It just means you have to camp a little further from the towns. If you can be self sufficient and can live without Maccas or the local counter meal, you will still be able to easily find free camping in Tas and I suspect pretty much all over Oz.

As to people with filthy habits that go around the country spreading mayhem and bad naming all campers/caravanners, when was the last time someone here "advised" one of these morons that they were doing the wrong thing. Rhetorical question, no need to reply, thanks.

The last place I would want to "camp" would be the rest areas that seem to be the subject of this discussion.

P.S. - email sent to Minister Bryan Green today.

Keep in mind that it's not the councils causing the issue but the caravan park owners who have made complaint to the ACCC.

Don't boycott the town and hurt people who had no say in it.
My alternative to cheap import trailers;

Sadly if they want to get the message across, asking nicely wont do shizt. You know councils and governments go for the least logical option everytime.

Gone to a new home

we spent 12 months round oz - and the places with the free camping we stayed for ages - where we had to pay we stayed overnight - unless we had admin to take care of.  we only spent 2 weeks in nsw - qld s.a and tassie got the lions share of our trip money - and we spent a bloody fortune on that trip.  just because you free camp doesnt mean you arent worth anything to the local economy - in our case it was the inverse.
if nissan made a prop plane using the zd30 - would you fly in it?

if fishing were easy it would be called "your mum"

Just came back from a month on the road and it seems most caravan parks are putting in more and more cabins to the detriment of tourist sites. I hear plenty of mumbles about free camping but nothing from the motel industry about these cabins. They must surely be affecting motel use especially in smaller towns. It must also be said that some caravan parks are getting pretty run down, and one we stayed in at Tin Can Bay looked like nothing had been spent on it since it was built. Probably in the late 50s or early 60s by the look of the fittings.
With the price of real estate on the coastal fringe it seems like we may not get any improvement in the near future, and with more and more people hitting the road I can't see how everyone will be able to find a spot without resorting to free camping regardless of the setup costs.
Interesting to see a lot of young couples doing the big trip with a rig worth at least $150g in my estimation. Can't remember having that much spare cash when we had young kids. Times change.
End of small rant!!
I'm not lost, I'm here!
