What's the reason for the upgrade?

If you have a 105 cruiser it's very similar to what you are considering?

How about other options?
add a sprintex supercharger
a couple of new seats
new carpet
new stereo

or just drop a honking huge holden v8 into? Go the 6 litre!  >:D

Mike 286K on the clock and lossing coolant to somewhere each week.  and a few other issues  so it's either invest $$$ into this car or bit the bullet and endebt myself to a bank forever.

4.8 is not cheap to run mine is loaded with heaps of stuff and of course lots of weight. Driving on the highway the best i can get is 19 l/100 and towing about 22.5 l/100 . I'm pretty happy with that as most of that was cruise in 4 th gear when towing with a/c on.

Ough, that hurts the wallet.

FWIW, 4wd action did a 'used tourer' comparo in the latest edition. The pick of the bunch for them was the 2006 Patrol with the 4.2L turbo diesel. Apparently it's a rare beast but..... worth the hassle of finding one.

What about a 70series wagon? At least the latest ones have ABS and airbags.

According to the Toyota website they only have twin airbags, no ABS yet  :'(
