Who here works for an airline and what do you do?
EG Engineer, Pilot, Operations, Cleaner or anything else?
I thought we could start an airline related thread and maybe answer a few questions for the guys on here about what happens behind the scenes, breakdowns, safety, delay reasons, operational stuff (within reason) etc.

I fly, alot. Does that count?

Here's a question for someone. When Virgin Australia first started, the flight and cabin crew were all young, good looking and great fun. What happened?

Not sure about that, but the Lauda crew when they used to fly in to SYD wore Levi 501 jeans. Imagine tall blonde buxom German lasses wearing figure hugging Levis...
Enough said.

When a plane lands the stationary wheels cause friction on the tarmac and the smoke indicates heavy wearing. Why don't the designers fit fan blades between the wheels so they can spin up to speed and minimise the friction?

What about FFs like Scarps, post some bad airline stories up? The airline guts can try to answer the questions. Let's not let it develop into an airline bagging thread! Just some stories.

My Aunts cousin was a flight engineer for South African Airways. He put me off flying over Africa. In the 80's and 90's apparently lots of countries don't have decent air traffic control or radar. So the pilots all had an agreement to call out their position and altitude on the radio on the same frequency. Which was great except the various military aircraft didn't. So they just hoped everything was OK...

In 1993 coming to land at Lusaka International airport. The Zambian airforce are also
Based there and share the runway. We were  on final approach and the plane goes full throttle and steeply banks. Captain comes on the intercom. "Sorry about that ladies and gentlemen. The  Zambian Airforce, in their wisdom, just launched a helicopter in front of me. We will go round and try that again"

Question for the pilots. What is an airpocket?
We picked some friends up from an international flight and they looked very disheveled and worse for wear. They said they'd  hit an 'air pocket' just as dinner was being served and ended up wearing the soup...

Once on a flight, this great looking hostie tapped me on the shoulder and invited me down the back of the plane for some 'you know what'. I quickly unbuckled my seat belt and followed her down relishing the thought of what was to come.

Remember
Chill, put the aircon on, climb another great track in the Vic High Country, then look north to see what our Qld brothers are up to on the beach?

Not a pilot but have been in severe storms at night over the mountains in twin turbo prop  light aircraft, was a hell ride watching the Altimeter drop a 1000 ft and have your guts in your mouth then suddenly gain 2 odd thousand feet just as quick [ think of riding a jumping , kicking, bucking  wildest bull ride youve everseen and times it by ten for the best part of what seemed like an hour ]  ,, I'll go with downdraft columns  of strong air currents  = no lift from the wings  [ think high speed elevator going down, feels like the bottom just fell out from under you  ] that force the aircraft down, then flying out the otherside to hit a column of fast rising air currents = lift to the wings, back to the height you were traveling at .
