We are thinking of getting away from Cairns for a couple of nights in a couple of nights, and we were thinking of camping somewhere just north or south of Townsville.

We are looking for either somewhere beach front or on a river / lake, ideally with some facilities like toilets or showers as we have a baby.

We don't mind caravan parks as long as your not jammed in like sardines, we have stayed in some nice ones.

Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

Freecamp at Bluewater right hand side of highway although limited time.
Rollingstone caravan Park apparently a good one (haven't been there myself but has been recommended).
Another caravan park Bluewater but don't know if it's on the water.
From reports Rollingstone appears a good choice

Paluma Dam, Big Crystal Creek (Paradise waterhole)

Closer to Ingham - Wallaman Falls, Broadwater State forest, Jourama Falls, also Lucinda caravan park

Rollingstone Caravan Resort is nice -  a Big 4 so not cheap. For more space, you can camp up past the pool and be almost right on the beach,  (avoids the 'glampers' with their flatscreens, evening karaoke, air conditioners running half the day)

Cheers guys, what's Broadwater like? I heard its quite nice and by a river?

We just spent 5 days at Broadwater,  absolutely beautiful and didn't want to leave. You just have to wear shoes in the crystal clear water as there can be freshwater stone fish. Cold showers only too.
When we left Broadwater, we stayed 1 night at home and didn't want to be there so we went out and spent 4 days at Bivouac Junction which is only about 55 mins from Townsville, just out of Charters Towers. It is a magic spot on the junction of the burdekin and fanning rivers. There is heaps to do, swimming in the pool or river, fishing (cooked up a few good sized sooty grunters on the coals) and kayaking. You can have a fire and there are hot showers as well. A great relaxing spot.

Cheers

Murray Falls? It's a beautiful camp spot just south of Tully and nice creek to swim.
National Park, cold showers. May not be far enough away for you.

Broadwater is a great place to camp also.
