A tip for anyone interested. I've just gone online and this year applied for a postal vote.  http://www.aec.gov.au/election/pva/

Used to hate trying to juggle work and get to a polling booth first thing Saturday morning or last thing Saturday afternoon and deal with the queues and the people handing out flyers. One year we were lucky enough to be travelling and applied by mail for a postal vote and have done the same every election since.  This year it's even easier as you can apply on line which means the ballot papers are delivered to my address and I just seal them up and post them back.

Whether I'm travelling or not, heaps easier to do a postal vote than deal with the Saturday trip to a polling booth.

We do it too. This year we are leaving for the Cape three days after they start mailing them out. Given Australia Post's recent record! I think we will have to queue with the locals at Lockhart River on polling day.

I don't get why people go early and line up to vote...our local school is a few hundred metres up the road,  we just rock in there in the last hour of the arvo, there's no lining up and plenty of vacant bored electrol roll staff there that are eager to serve you for something to do.

They have voting polls open about two weeks before the day for interstate travelers.  We just go in and when they ask 'will you be interstate on polling day' we say yes.   Well that was our plan at that time. Pity it turned out differently. :D

ACT has a very high absentee vote, as most of are awake up to this and just vote in advance whenever it suits.

for the last 3 elections I've been running the P&C sausage sizzle at the school's polling booth.
Pre-pols & postal votes have caused a 30% drop in numbers attending our polling booth, with a comparable drop in income for the P&C. So much so, that it is almost not viable to run.

If you don't want to vote on the day, at least drop into the local school and grab a sausage. Community groups rely on opportunities like this for a bit of their income.
