Hi all,
I am having trouble keeping lettuce crisp and not a soggy brown mess when we camp. As we are going away for a three week trip soon I am desperate for what other campers do on longish trips.

Hi,
we keep ours in the fridge in a plastic bag and wrap it with kitchen paper to keep it from getting wet and slimy.
cheers

Before heading off I wash and pull apart the lettuce (or just wash the bagged mixed lettuce which I prefer) drain as best I can, then put into a container (eg systema).  I find the lettuce doesn't get bashed about in the container, even though it takes up a bit of space in the fridge.  It can be stacked etc that way too.  Maybe put a layer of paper towel in the bottom if you're worried about the water - but I find I don't need to do that. Hope this helps, have fun!
If at first you don't succeed...do it your wife's way! :P

We vacuum seal it before we go and we have a sealer in the camper running of a inverter keeps for ages

I've been using those "Fresh & Crisp" bags with great success. Seem to do really well with keeping the lettuce fresh. Woolworths and IGA seem to stock them.

Which ever way you choose to go I would just include the paper towel on the bottom of the container as I think it really extends the life of the lettuce by asorbing any extra moisture.

That is rabbit food isnt it?  ;D

Good work  ;D ;D ;D ;D

We find it it's kept dry it lasts quite well.

The main problem is that it gets in the road all the time.  It's in the road when you want a beer, It's in the road when you throw another six pack in.

So ours is usually squashed by a six pack a few times before I get the sh...ts and thrown it in the bin.

Problem solved.
