We are currently trying to find the best insurance option for our soft floor camper due to be picked up in a couple of weeks. I have rang CIL this morning and was happy enough with the quote until I read the PDS (will not cover contents if it does not have hard walls) so I rang them back only to be told that camper trailers dont come under the PDS and there is no PDSfor them but they do cover contents in canvas campers. So my question is who is everyone using? And how have you gone with claims?

I know this has probably been done to death but i dont want to get caught out if i can help it.

Cheers

We went through TCIS and ended up with two policies, CIL for the camper and CGU for camping equipment. Not as cheap as other policies but I'm happy with the level of cover.

Gone to a new home

I am with GIO. I rang a few weeks ago to ask a few questions.

Yes, covered anywhere in Australia, even if I try and drive through a raging river.
Yes, canvas is covered if malishous damage.
Yes, contents covered (up to a nominated amount) if stolen.
Yes, covered if camper is stoeln from Home, or unattended campsite.

This topic has been covered HEAPS of times. Maybe try searching and you will find all the info you need  ;D

Just remember to make sure it is listed as a camper trailer & not a BOX trailer as some of the insurance companies seem to do - the premium will be lower as a CT

I compared CIL but I ended up with NRMA for financial reasons.

The contents issue was a point I discussed with both as the PDS said nothing was covered in the canvas annex, but I was confused about the annex versus main body as both are canvas construction.

I was told that NRMA cover contents for damage (eg fire) in canvas structures, but not theft. However, if items were stored/locked in a hard structure, like the drawbar locker, they will cover for theft. If the CT was closed (packed), and secured, they then cover contents for theft. The difference is how "locked" the structure is if stuff is stolen, but always covered for damage.

I'm guessing it would be similar with other insurers.

Thanks for the HELPFUL replies. CIL told me that contents were covered as long as the camper is locked. When i queried how do you lock an erected camper she said to put locks on the zips and our gear would be covered for theft. I guess my question that hasn't been covered in quoted threads above is " is it safe to go with an insurer that has no written terms for campers and just go by the he said she said that i have been told over the phone" .

Ask them to send you a fax / email etc with them confirming this.... if they aren't willing to do so keep looking

Captain

While I have my Camper insured itself, I use my home contents policy and insure my camping contents thru that. The 2 x engels and Honda generator are listed items and that costs approx $25/item per year for full cover. For smaller items like bikes, kayaks, camp tables, chairs etc... I have unspecified contents of $3,000, of which no single item can be over $600 in value. From memory this is around $60/year (could be wrong on that figure). Excess is about $200 on each claim ie. in the one theft, only $200 excess total, not for each item.

Anyway, this was the best and cheapest way I could get cover and apparently is all covered if inside a tent or locked up outside. Worth giving your home insurance company a call and seeing what they offer - mine is SGIO.

Cheers
