'Big' Victorian tremor rocks Gippsland, suburbs Mex Cooper and Nino Bucci

A screen grab from the Geoscience Australia website, which shows the epicentre of the quake (see the red dot, pointed to by the red arrow).

An earthquake has struck in Gippsland, sending tremors throughout Melbourne and the state's south.

Reports of shaking have been tweeted by twits from the city centre, Thomastown, Prahran, Blackburn and other inner suburbs.
Korumburra, VIC, Australia

The quake hit at 11.32am and registered 4.4, according to Geoscience Australia, and was centred near Korumburra, 120 kilometres south-east of Melbourne.

The Geoscience Australia website appeared to briefly crash immediately after the quake. The website is again live.

"That was a big one," tweeted one person from Rowville.

Residents in Sunbury, Cheltenham, North Melbourne and Scoresby all reported feeling shaking.

Noelle Walker, a volunteer at Korumburra tourism attraction Coal Creek Community Park, said the two-to-three second shudder forced them to rush about 12 people out of the foyer.

"There was no damage, it just gave a jolly good shake,'' she said.

A Korumburra Secondary College spokeswoman said there were no students at the school, but about five staff members had felt "a bit of a shudder''.

The shaking was felt in Port Melbourne, Fitzroy, the Basin, Black Rock, Basin, Inverloch, Bundoora, Berwick, Ferntree Gully and the city.

Dr Ian Cartwright from Monash University's school of geosciences told 3AW it was unlikely there would be widespread damage caused by the earthquake.

"That's fairly large for an earthquake in south-east Australia, which is why we felt it over quite a wide area," Dr Cartwright said.

"It's very unlikely there will be damage from an earthquake like that.

"You may get the odd crack in the wall, but I'd doubt it would be anything worse than that."

Korumburra, at the foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges in Gippsland, has a history of quakes and is known as the centre of Victoria's seismic activity.

In late March, a small earthquake, registering 2.4, was felt there and Korumburra was hit by four quakes in 2009, two of which registered 4.6, and  resulted in a series of aftershocks.

Had the car up on stands in the shed and was underneath it, got out real fast and had to steady the car from wobbling. Was one of those jelly type wobbles and a big rumble, but nothing fell of the walls.

I remember as a kid in NZ been woken up by the train, then realised there were no trains by us. That was 7.6 which was bad enough. no major injuries but I checked out the local supermarket in the morning and the floor was a mess, smashed jars of everything all over the place.
Life's much better now, living on top of a hill in Brisbane.

Heard the rumble for about 15 seconds but only very slight movement. More like a tickle.

Thought it was the quarry at Rowville blasting.

Now now Bruce.....we don't need a 7.8 quake mate  ;D

Gave us a good 20 second shaking in Poowong.

Nup felt nothing.  Had a minor one a few years ago, mid renovation, and had sarking up on the walls.  As the whole house shook the foil really vibrated against the frame it was a weird sound it took me a few seconds to work out what was happening!

eatMYdust

i think the people in Christchurch wouldn't even feel a quake that small now in fact i believe they now have news about how long the ground had stop ed shaking
if you pick at it, it won't heal

Yer that was the second one for the day, thought the wall unit was going over for a second. Rich at 100 years old she'd have some  charm and probably seen and felt worse.
