Earth Hour

Earth Hour did anybody turn off the lights to save the planet on Sat night  , I couldnt as I was camping with a mate . Sitting beside a camp fire burning wood releasing CO2 but no lights were turned on to turn off .It was very nice ,,, now what did every body eles get up to ?

We lost power in the last cyclone for 29 hours so I think we did enough to save the world.

We were camping in the camper trailer too. The only power we used was 12v.

Teabag is spot on, worked in the power industry for some time and Earth Hour is one big headache for the guys controlling the system. There is only a reduction in domestic load there is no reduction in the generation within the system. I'd explain more but I don't want to get too technical.

I turned on the A/C to max and burnt some tyres and plastic, and killed and cooked some endangered species.

If people think by turning off the lights and burning a candle will reduce CO₂ emissions then I would agree it is a total waste of time (especially from all the crap that burning wax puts into the atmosphere).

But if you look at it from the perspective of what it is - an awareness exercise - then it is a worthwhile event.  It is about raising awareness and showing governments that people want to see a change.

It wouldn't be too hard to manage the system when the load was dropping off - but one hell of a headache once people start turning lights back on again....

Only light the candle after checking for oxygen. I believe they used to use a canary in the old days.

I was up at Mooloolaba doing the Triathlon last weekend, and staying in our CT nearby.. You've never seen so many 500W+ lights, mobile gensets and catering refrigerant vehicles going full-bore along the course and exhibition areas; and the shops, bars, restaurants, and apartments along the strip were ablaze.

Earth Hour?  Not on the Sunny Coast..

I did my bit.  I didn't make a coffee for a whole hour.     And watched a movie I'd taped before we had to turn the lights out.  Didn't use my puter (I think) and I did it in the dark ... like usual really.  Who can afford lectricity these days?
