We have just joined your group. The reason is that we are planning on doing the Gibb River trip in around May/June 2017 and we are looking for tips from seasoned campers and perhaps save ourselves a few mistakes. We have never done this before however it is on our bucket list so we thought we should bite the bullet while we still can.

We are in our 60's and were thinking of purchasing an off-road camper and 4WD (probably a dual cab with canopy that I can also use for work). We are thinking second hand camper/trailer perhaps around $5,000 and a near new dual cab.

Any suggestions on what we should be looking for or things to avoid?

Welcome John
If you look in the trip report section you will find some good info.
Here's the one I did this year

If you can afford it, look at a hard floor type camp trailer.
Much quicker and easier for you to set up, especially if your on the road, setting up every day or 2.

Welcome guys,

The Gibb River road can be perfect condition, but it can also be shocking. Your trailer needs to be well built, especially if you plan on taking it to Mitchell Falls and the Bungles.

I'd try and spend a bit more on the trailer if you plan on having it for a while; 10k should get you a nice one and you can always sell it later for around the same price.

Here's lots of information from our trip up there last year: http://www.4wdingaustralia.com/4x4/wa-locations/a-summary-of-5-weeks-in-the-kimberley/
