I did think if I could get them to stand still long enough in the grass to run over then I wouldn't need a cage in the first place.

A diesel exhaust will still work.  If it doesn't actually poison the birds, it'll still replace the oxygen so they'll suffocate.  They might choke on the soot first though

This method won't work if the birds have undergone Confined Space training.
